Directions: Hidden behind the vendors of the San Lorenzo market Recommended by Diva, this became one of our favorite places and we visited three times on this trip. It's sort of hard to find as it's blocked by the vendors in the San Lorenzo market. Similar to Trattoria da Mario in its energy, there was always a wait for a table and the food was always worth the wait. The menu changes daily and is fairly short - maybe 5 or 6 choices per course, some of which always seemed to sell out early. The servers were always moving at high speed, so it was sometimes hard to get their attention, but the service was always friendly. On our first visit, it was Friday lunch and the focus was on fish. I had spaghetti with cozze and calamari to start, and my wife had ribollita. We both had grilled sea bass which was outstanding and flake-off-the-bone tender. Fried potatoes were homemade and excellent. The house red wine was good. We never did get our coffee – the servers were just too busy! Lunch for two was around €45. My second visit was a solo lunch. I had a very good passato di fagioli e cavolo nero to start, followed by polpette di patate e carne. The soup was excellent (all the soups here seemed to be popular and the ones we tried were all very good). The meatballs were heavier on potato and lighter on meat than I expected - more of a potato cake than a meatball - but were very good. With wine and water, lunch was €20. Our third visit was a very cold Saturday lunch, and I had the passato di fagioli e cavolo nero again while my wife had spaghetti vongole. We both had braciole steaks fried and served in a very garlicky tomato sauce. The steaks were excellent and we didn't have to worry about vampires for the rest of the day! Lunch for two with 3/4 liter of red wine, water, and coffee was about €41. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
