Inexpensive, friendly, old fashioned, family run trattoria with authentic home cooking

Directions: A couple of blocks north of Piazza della Repubblica at the far end of the curving, antiques shop-lined via Borgo Dora

For much of our lunch here we were the only ones there except for the owner/family members eating their own lunch. The menu was handwritten which always poses a problem for me with European script. The selection was a couple of pasta dishes and a few meat secondi such as vitello tonnato and a pork shank.

We began by sharing an order of tender gnocchi with a ragu (one of three options for sauce). This was followed by a nicely cooked cutlet Milanese and a rich beef dish of brasato (braised).

We had originally declined any side dishes when ordering and declined again when offered by the cook who came out of the kitchen. But the owner came to the table and announced what vegetables were to accompany our secondi (mashed potatoes in the case of the beef and a salad of radicchio with the cutlet). Apparently the vegetable is included in the price of the meal.

With a bottle of water and a carafe of local red wine the meal was 35 euros.

By the time we left the other tables had substantially filled with local patrons. Italians apparently don't eat as early as American tourists.
