Portonovo: Various beach restaurants

Portonovo is apparently one of the only beach areas on this section of the coast. There are several "beachy-dumpy" trattorie, all specializing in seafood.

Directions: Portonovo is an exit on the road from Sirolo to Ancona. So far as I can see, there is no town of Portonvo.

My wife and I ate at one of the trattorie first a couple of years ago when, at lunchtime on First Communion Sunday, all of the resturants in Sirolo (at the base of Monte Conero) were reserved by celebrating families so we drove off into the hinterland looking for a place to eat. Returning to Monte Conero this fall, we vowed to revisit the beachfront places again. We lunched there on a Friday and again on Sunday. The Sunday was a beautiful summery day when virtually all of Marche went to the beach at Portonovo. We waited nearly two hours for a table since all eateries were filled with folks who got there before us. The beach, which was sparsely occupied on Friday, now looked like Coney Island on the Fourth of July. Fortunately, we were fortified at the bar with a plastic liter bottle of vino bianco (no glass at the take-out window). The food is, on balance, pretty darn good considering the volume produced by the kitchens. But the main thing is the goodnatured fun of it all. I'm sure we'd return again next time we're nearby.
