Great place for lunch near Herculaneum

Directions: Located on the main road along the bay, a hundred meters or so from the entrance to the Herculaneum historical excavation.

This is an elegant but casual restaurant, located just outside the entrance to the Herculaneum excavation, featuring outstanding fresh seafood. This was probably our favorite restaurant on our long trip to Italy this past summer. It was so good we had lunch there two days in a row, the second day driving there after our visit to Pompeii, about 8 miles away. It is well worth a special trip.

The mostly seafood-based menu is written on a chalkboard and changes every day. The fritura mista was a standout, but everything was wonderfully fresh. I would say the preparation leans more toward Haute Cuisine than other restaurants we experienced in Campania. (I think I heard that the chef/owner at one point had, or worked at, a restaurant in NYC.) Another plus was the fantastic and reasonably priced wine list--one of the best we found in Italy. Great selection of wines from Campania and elsewhere in Italy. Prices were very reasonable for the quality. I think we paid around 90 euros each day for two adults and two children, inluding wine and a dessert or two. Highly recommended.
