Pompeii: Zi Caterina

Via Roma 20

Closing day: Tuesday

Great food, excellent wine list and reasonable prices in a spacious dining room.

Directions: Just down the main street from the Porta Anfiteatro

We were in Pompeii on a Monday night in early October, and this was the only restaurant on our list that was open Mondays. Not to worry, it was close to our hotel (Forum) and we enjoyed an outstanding dinner. Reservations (supposedly recommended) were not needed on this night, and the five of us had the spacious dining room almost to ourselves early on.

The menu is extensive and there is an excellent antipasto buffet. My fettucine alla bolognese primi and veal marsala secondi were excellent, while the veal scallopini with lemon and a ravioli dish got rave reviews. The wine list is also extensive; we enjoyed the delightful 2001 Feudi San Gregorio Rubrato (13) and an even better 1999 Terradora Aglianica d'Ipana "Il Principio" (13). The individual lemon cakes for dessert are not to be missed!

Our bill for this most pleasant evening came to 87 (but I'm not sure now if that was for the three of us or all five).
