When: 2014

Nicely prepared Umbrian food in Rome, with some twists.

Three of us had an enjoyable dinner here. We began by sharing an antipasti of a light vegetable flan, in a tasty puddle of pureed favas. We all went straight to secondi. I had lamb shank served with a rich herbal pesto, my husband had beef stewed with onions, and our friend had pork in a complex sauce vaguely reminiscent of a Mexican mole. Fantastic contorni of sauteed chard, and long-cooked cabbage. All the flavors were thoughtfully put together, some different tastes. We split a dessert of a deeply flavored chocolate cake with a very strong ginger accent.

When: 2012

Creative, Umbrian cuisine with fantastic fixed price lunch menu and great service.

Directions: In the Monti neighbourhood, not too far off Via Nazionale.

Foodies have been talking about L'Asino d'Oro for quite a while, so I first tried dinner there in June 2011. I have been a serious fan since, having eaten there several times, most recently in mid-April 2012.

The food is very creative, service attentive, and the quality of ingredients is wonderful. Best of all is the 12-euro lunch menu which includes 3 courses, a glass of wine and a bottle of water. Hard to find a better deal anywhere in Rome!

There are always several meat dishes as well as lighter fare. The menu changes frequently, and the portions are not large -- this is not a trattoria! But it's a wonderful meal and a good experience. There's a lovely little patio on the street for sunny days, and a funky interior.
