Cannaregio: La Cantina

Very good food and wine, but pricey.

I have mixed feelings about La Cantina. I liked the setting, really enjoyed the food and wine, but felt like we paid too much even though we didn’t ask what we were getting ourselves into.

My wife and I and another couple arrived in Venice around 1 pm after flying all night from Washington Dulles with a layover and plane change in London. By the time we got to our hotel in Cannaregio and checked in, it was nearly 4 pm and we were tired and hungry. We walked down Strada Nova and I saw La Cantina and remembered reading good reviews of it.

We sat down outside and enjoyed watching tourists and locals stroll up and down Strada Nova. The German tourists at the table next to us had a nice looking platter of mixed seafood. When the waitress came, we ordered wine and told her we wanted something to eat. She asked is we liked fish, which we do, so she said she would bring us something. Shortly, she came back and asked if we liked raw fish, which we do, so she said she would bring us some of that too. At no point did we ask to see a menu nor were we offered one. In our jet-lagged, addled state, we never thought to ask about prices.

She recommended a Malvasia wine, which I had never had before, and it was excellent. For the second bottle, we had a Tocai, which was also very good. For food, she brought us two platters of fish – one cooked, the other not. Both were very, very tasty. Probably a bit more than we needed, but we managed to eat them along with a couple of baskets of bread.

When the bill came, we were shocked. Maybe we shouldn’t have been, but we were. The total was 192 euros for the four of us. The wine was very reasonable -- 21 euros per bottle – but one fish platter was 100 euros and the other was 50 euros.
