Directions: In the Sassi Part of the restaurant is housed in an excavated cave and part constructed out from it in the typical tufa rock blocks, making this a characteristic structure of the Sassi. While it’s on the tourist path they take pride in serving up authentic local fare. It was a chilly and rainy night when we dined here so the substantial dishes and warming Aglianico wine were perfect. I opted for a speciality of the zone I’d never encountered before, la crapiata (yes, that name is just a joke waiting to happen), composed of three types of legumes in a filling soup. That and a salad, after the typical five-plate Lucanian antipasto, was all I could manage. Bryan had the orecchiette topped with sautéed breadcrumbs and crumbled peperoni cruschi, a real local dish deriving from la cucina povera.
