I was nearing the end of my month long stay in Florence in January and I went out to run some last minute errands and do some laundry. I thought, this evening I’ll eat somewhere close by because my legs were tired after walking and enjoying Florence. That was when I saw Trattoria da Guido.

Trattoria da Guido has an unassuming facade with a tasteful sign atop the front door and in front, a stand with a menu. I fixed my eyes on the menu and noted several reasonably priced selections that interested me. There was a very important handwritten note underneath the menu stating “No coperto and No Servizio.” Coperto’s and servizio’s are cover charges and some restaurants charge both, which can add 14 euro for two on the bill.

I returned about 8:30 PM for dinner to a moderately busy restaurant and I was seated immediately. I ordered a half of a liter of house red wine which was very good, and a bottle of sparkling water as I was seated. I perused the plentiful menu, it was not what I would expect from a Trattoria which might normally have a small menu. I chose for a starter the artichoke risotto.

I’m not one given to flowery talk but the risotto was sublime; hot, creamy and with a hint of the delicate taste of artichoke floating throughout the dish. After thoroughly cleaning the plate with the help of the fine Tuscan bread on the table I looked at the menu again.

I ordered the grilled swordfish with spinach. This also was full of flavor. It was a generous portion of fish and a healthy side of pan-seared spinach with garlic and oil. The meal was amazing, I must have ate in record time because the busboy seemed confused that my plate was empty.

I topped off the meal with some homemade cheesecake and a glass of amaretto. The entire experience was wonderful from beginning to end; the food, service, and the ambiance.

After all this the check was a mere 33 euro. True to their sign; no coperto and no servizio. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Florence I think it was simply amazing!
