Navona: Trattoria da Sergio alle Grotte

Vicolo delle Grotte 27

Closing day: Sunday

No-nonsense fare in a bustling little spot

If it weren’t for the clanging plates and silverware, and dull din of conversation emitting from within we may have walked right on past not realizing this was a restaurant. The sign sucked us in ... it proclaimed Sergio to be “il principe della amatriciana”. Well, having recently visited the town of Amatrice, we just had to see about that grand statement.

The sign didn’t lie; they served us a very good plate of spaghetti all’amatriciana. A heaping helping of mixed antipasti and the pasta were all the courses we could muster for the night, though the aroma of grilling meat smelled very enticing. Also on the menu were standby pastas like carbonara and puttanesca, with a fish menu on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The two rooms filled fast and there was a line outside when we departed so Sergio must know what he’s doing to draw a crowd. The location near Campo dei Fiori helps, too, I’m sure.
