Slow Masters - L'Arte della Bottega di Bozzi Anna Maria
Giulia da Urbino
Montottone is a small village in the newly created Fermo province, in the Southern part of Le Marche region. This small place, perched on the top of a hill, hosted, until just after WWII, 48 pottery producers that created pots, jugs and all sort of earthware vessels for the entire area. This tradition is currently still pursued by the Bozzi family.
“We really want to preserve our tradition, the old shapes and the old colours, but nowadays an artisan is alive only if he meets the new needs of the society. Trying to meet our clients' needs while respecting the traditional techniques and working manually is the choice that our family made.” says Anna Maria in a beautiful video that you can find in their website.
Anna Maria runs the place with her brother and with the invaluable help and guidance of their still active father (who you see in the video preparing the fascinating wood-fired oven, something rare to see these days!).
“Working with our hands we create objects that have a soul, that are the expression of our sentiments as much as of this land, that we love deeply.”
Last time I was there I ordered an entire set of objects that were used in cheesemaking and some traditional, simple, yet absolutely beautiful plates to be used to serve soups.
If you're visiting the area make sure you don't miss this place and these people, always enthusiastic about showing you their place, their skills and letting you taste a bit of the past, so tightly connected with the present.
