Slow Masters - L'Inganno, Dipinto in Chianti

Jane Parker

We discovered Sophie Rose and her workshop, L'Inganno, when we lived in Greve-in-Chianti. At that time her shop was located at the far end of the piazza, across from the church. Now she has moved up the hill to Panzano. We will miss dropping in to say hello when we return to Greve. Now we’ll need to travel all the way to Panzano!

Rose's work is unique, exquisitely detailed and beautiful. More often than not you will find her door shut as she will be busy at some nearby villa or establishment creating her one of a kind wall murals, decorative doors and other interior decoration effects. If she is in her shop, she will be painting a commissioned trompe l'oeil or creating and painting her own furniture designs. Her shop is not a show room but a true artisan's workshop with finished products propped up against the wall or in the window.

One of our prized acquisitions while we were there hangs in our kitchen here in San Diego. We gave Rose a photo of our Italian dinnerware and asked that she create a trompe l'oeil using the dish patterns. We could not have been more thrilled when it finally arrived; it is beautiful. Now, we love to point out to guests the connection between their dinner plates and the painting.

The quality of Rose's work is par excellence - without peer. If you are wanting to bring home something truly unique and special from your time in Italy, you may want to stop in at L'Inganno. If you do, please give our greetings to Rose and tell her we'll see her next summer. Be sure to check out her website.

Jane has been to Italy too many times to count, including one year of living in Greve-in-Chianti. A quick visit many years ago found her hungry for more and so she keeps returning. You can find more of Jane's writing on her blog, Casey, Italy and Other Good Stuff or on her SlowTrav member page, Jane.
