Slow Masters - Bottega di Mastro Antonucci

Joe N

While spending two days in Camogli in November 2008, we noticed a woodcarver's shop with nice objects on display. The store was almost always open, but usually with no one inside, with a handwritten sign in Italian directing people somewhere. The word "magazzino" appeared on the sign, with an arrow pointing up the street - for some reason I took it for granted that this meant some sort of magazine or book shop, but no such place could be found.

On our last day I suddenly realized that there was a room not far away and up some steps that we hadn't noticed, and that this was indeed a magazzino - warehouse - of the woodworker's store. I walked in and asked if we could buy something from the store.

I was greeted by Bruno, who didn't speak a word of English, but was very friendly, and accompanied us back to the store where we bought two olive wood cutting boards for our kitchen. We had a broken conversation in Italian, and he explained how to take care of the boards.

This a photo of the two boards at our home, with some typical stones we picked up at Camogli while beachcombing.
