Two couples spent one week on the Calcione estate in April 2001. This was our first experience with a vacation rental in Italy. We booked through the web site.

Calcione Castle was established in 1483 and is set in the hills of the Val di Chiana. There are several guesthouses on the estate, located amidst the fields, orchards and woods. There are two large lakes, a tennis court, and at least two swimming pools in the complex.

The nearest town Monte San Savino, 11 km from Calcione, is located right off the A1 Autostrada. Monte San Savino has a modern Coop supermarket which was convenient for provisioning our villa. Calcione is positioned nicely for day trips to Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Volterra, and Western Umbria.

Calcione produces olive oil, wine, honey, and fresh vegetables (in season). We sampled everything we could and enjoyed it all. The owners were very pleasant and spoke fluent English. Unfortunately they were not keen on tourist information or, at a minimum, not well informed. We requested they make reservations for us at the Uffizi for a date later in the week. They told us there would be no problem getting in and reservations were not necessary this time of the year. We waited in line 2 1/2 hours to get in the Uffizi without reservations.

The accommodations were simple but comfortable. Ours was a first floor (1 story up) 2 bedroom/2 bath unit with kitchen, dining room, and a sitting room with a fireplace. The furniture and beds were clean and comfortable with ample room for everyone. Our house had all single beds. It was a nice size kitchen with refrigerator, oven, stove, and small washing machine. We had all the pans, utensils and silverware we needed. We were able to wash a small load of laundry every night and leave the villa with an entirely clean wardrobe for our next week on the road.

We needed heat at the time of year we were there and found that the register was not working properly in our bedroom. It was a chilly experience. We enjoyed a fire in the fireplace every night after dinner, complete with a glass of Calcione red wine.

There were three other apartments in our building but other buildings are different. The web site shows the number of apartments in each building. We had a private and large balcony.

It was a relaxing and enjoyable place to call home for a week and we would return.

SlowTrav Asks What about that large highway that runs near the estate that I saw on my road atlas - does it exist? (It is printed with dotted lines, as if for planned construction.) Do you hear road noise from the estate? Response:There was no noise at all. We were very remote into the interior although not too far from the autostrada ... guessing 15 miles.
