House, sleeps 6, near Todi, Umbria WhenMay 2004, One week LocationCasa Mattio is located in a spectacular spot about 6 km from the hilltop city of Todi in Umbria, Italy. The cottage sits next to a forested hill with a sweeping, broad view from the patio of the Tiber River Valley and hills beyond. The location is quiet, peaceful, refreshing. Our family of 6 adults was more than pleased with the cottage and its location. The cottage was roomier than we had anticipated from web photos. Nearby AmenitiesA car is essential for this location because the nearest shopping and restaurant facilities are several km. away. We enjoyed purchasing groceries from bakeries, vegetable and fruit shops, meat and cheese shops, and other shops in Todi. The House/ApartmentCasa Mattio sits directly across the road from the owner's home. It is a charming old vine-covered cottage in good condition. Double doors open out to the patio beside the cottage. As noted above, the rooms are larger than we anticipated. GardenThe private patio is bordered with rosemary plants as well as parsley and other herbs (nice to have fresh herbs available for cooking!). A colorful geranium graced the patio table. Other flowers bloomed nearby. Even though the weather was cooler than expected in May, we enjoyed sitting on the patio. A pool was available, but our stay came too early in the season for the pool to be open. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furniture and house are clean and comfortable. The rooms are furnished with interesting antiques. A large English-language library of books is available. The kitchen table had plenty of space for 6 people, and the sitting area comfortably accommodated all of us. We even had room for two guests one evening. Bedrooms/BathroomsBeds and bedrooms are comfortable with good quality bed linens and blankets. Each bedroom has nice windows; one has access to morning sunlight. Two bathrooms were adequate for our family of six. Plumbing works well, and we had ample water. The two double beds are firm; the two twin beds in one bedroom are less firm. KitchenWe found the kitchen very satisfactory for our cooking needs. All the pots, pans, dishes and cutlery we needed were available for breakfast and several evening meals we cooked. Problems or BonusesEven though we were expecting a dramatically beautiful location, we were still stunned by the glorious views! Agency and Representatives (and price)Summer's Leases staff were attentive, efficient, and extremely helpful. When we asked for extra assistance in making a choice between two properties, they responded quickly and helpfully. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? Our entire family says we'd love to come back again! Things to do in this areaWe took day trips to Todi (loved the views), Deruta (overwhelming but fascinating), Orvieto, Civita-Bagna Reggio (superb spot), and towns in Tuscany such as Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Cortona. We enjoyed two restaurants in Todi: La Mulinella and Jacopone's Ristorante (the waiter here was especially convivial). This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
