Review 1072: Fattoria Querceto, Apartment

Review by Mary L. from NH who is a SlowTrav Contributor

apartments on farm near Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Tuscany Chianti

September 2002, 1 week

The apartment is about 5 minutes off the highway but very quiet. It was also about 5 minutes from the town of Tavarnelle Val Di Pesa so you can go into town quickly if you need something. While you are close to a town and near to the highway, it is a very peaceful location among the olive trees and vineyards.

Nearby Amenities

You have to drive to get to the nearest place for coffee and groceries but it is within a 5 minute drive. There is a little shop in La Romita (about a 3 minute drive) to pick up some groceries which you could walk to but we always drove. The nearest restaurant is about a 3 minute drive. (I suppose you could walk but by the end of the day we didn't want to walk a mile). There are other restaurants in Tavarnelle which is within 5 min driving including a great pizza shop.

The House/Apartment

There are 2 buildings which have a total of 5 apartments plus the caretaker's apartment so it is not crowded and the caretaker was great. They looked to be working on restoring another building while we were there so I don't know if that is completed yet or if they are making that into more apartments. (Even with the renovation going on we didn't notice any noise while we were resting in the afternoon or when we got back at night.)

The apartment was neat and clean. It was very basic but that suited our needs. There are no screens on the windows but when we were there in September we didn't have any problem with bugs. There is 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom (shower only) and the livingroom/kitchen area is one room. The couch was a fold out which could sleep 2 people. (I can't vouch for the comfort though since we only slept in the bedroom.) The bed was very comfortable.

The kitchen had a small refrigerator (college dorm room size) and there is a stove but no oven (so no baking). Since we ate out every night it was fine to have limited cooking ability. The refrigerator was nice so that we could keep drinks and snacks in there.

There is a table set outside which is designated for each apartment but we never used it since out apartment was not on the ground floor. We did sit out by the pool which was great. The pool was nice and clean but we only put our feet in since by the end of the day it was too cool to actually go in the pool. The apartment is on a hillside so when you are sitting at the pool you have a great view.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was neat and clean and the furniture was in good shape and comfortable. If you have more than 2 people you would be cramped but for two people it is perfect.

Bedroom was basic with queen bed and bureau but was very nice. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was fine, the water from the shower tended to run out onto the floor of the bathroom but we just put a towel down and it was fine.

The kitchen was small and if cooking is something you love then this isn't the rental for you. There is no oven so any cooking has to be done on the stove top. The refridgerator was small. There were pots and pans but we never used them so I can't speak to their quality.

Problems or Bonuses

There were no real surprises. It was my first trip to Italy so I was a bit nervous about renting an apartment but it was perfect.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I booked directly through the Fattoria Querceto website but they are also listed in www.tuscany.net. It was easy to book and they were very nice. I was nervous about wiring the money for the deposit since I had never done that before and so I kept checking with them to see if they had received it. She made me feel that I shouldn't worry that they would eventually receive the wire transfer and everything would be fine (which it was). The caretaker was nice. She spoke very limited English but we managed to figure each other out. The reality of the place was better than the published information.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would absolutely stay here again. We are traveling back to Tuscany in May 2005 and we had a tough time deciding not to stay here. We eventually decided to choose a different rental only to stay in a different location. If we were going to explore the same area of Tuscany again I would definitely stay here. We loved this rental.

Things to do in this area

The location is great. You can easily get to San Casciano Val di Pesa, Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, San Gimignano etc. We found a great restaurant in San Donato in Poggio called La Toppa. We will definitely be going there again on our next trip. We liked it so much we ate there 2 times on our trip. It is about a 10-15 drive from the apartment.
