Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 1094: Owner, Casa Sora Chiara
3bed/3.5bath house in Montone, Umbria
April 2004, 10 days
Beautiful, quiet village on top of hill; the town looked like a movie set.
Town square a block away with cafe, post office, a couple of small food shops. A couple of nice restaurants in town.
Extraordinary renovation of house on three floors. Very large and comfortable living room/dining room/kitchen on first floor, along with laundry and bath. One BR/bath on second floor, and two BRs and baths on third floor.
No garden, but a short walk to the town square and cafe.
Very comfortable furnishings, large dining table (easily seats 8). Spotless.
Good beds; one BR with twins, two with queen beds. One bath per bedroom, though third floor bedrooms shared a shower.
Beautifully equipped; we're foodies and had a great time shopping at the local markets and cooking at home.
Problems or Bonuses
The town was friendly and absolutely beautiful; it was a joy to come home from the tourist haunts to a special place inhabited primarily by locals. Probably not a good place for those with mobility problems, as it is a fairly steep walk from parking to the house, and stairs in the house.
We were in Montone for their local celebration on Easter Monday, which was a real treat: fabulous costumes and processions, much trumpet blaring, lengthy pronouncements in Italian. All great fun. Also greatly enjoyed the spooky "procession of the dead Christ" in nearby Gubbio on Good Friday.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Margie, the owner, treated us like old friends when we were arranging the trip. Helped us with a tour guide (an old friend of Margie, and a wonderful guide in Assisi and Perugia). She found someone to drive one of our group to the Rome airport, helped us with restaurants, etc. etc. She could not have been more hospitable and helpful.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Absolutely. Montone is a treasure and Casa Sora Chiara is a lovely place to stay. Our only reservation is the lack of a garden. We were there in the spring, and didn't really miss it. But in the middle of summer, we might have felt a bit differently. The location on a walking street, and close proximity of the cafes on the town square enabled us to be outside.
Things to do in this area
Easy day trips to Perugia, Assisi, Gubio. The three restaurants in Montone are fine. Great location for exploring central Umbria.
