Review 110: Terre Toscane, S. Martino

Review by Leslie from Alabama

2bed/1bath house near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

March 2000

In March of 2000, my family rented the property called S. Martino from the agency Terre Toscane which is based out of Montepulciano. S. Martino is a small, independent house consisting of two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a large kitchen/sitting room. S. Martino was advertised in the brochure as being only 1 km from Montepulciano and accessible by foot - but the reality was that it was not accessible by foot (very busy road) and was more like 3 kms from the town.

The house itself was definitely worth the price. We paid under $400 for our ten day rental. The owner, Graziela, and her father spoke no English so that made it a challenge but we managed to get by. When we arrived, a bottle of homemade wine was on the table and Graziela drove down from her house above us on the hill to make sure she explained where everything was. They were wonderful hosts. We only wished we spoke more Italian.

Another advantage of the rental was that the owners were terrific and we got all the free homemade wine we wanted. The wine cellar was in the basement of our rental!!!! The location certainly could not be beat for touring Southern Tuscany and parts of Umbria. Montepulciano proper was a two-minute drive and since it was not tourist season we basically had the town and the locals to ourselves!!!!

The disadvantage was that the fireplace did not vent properly, although the owners did tell us this on the day we arrived. It is unfortunate that the agency never mentioned it us. March would have been a great time to have a fire when we got home from touring at night. Also, the front room was not well insulated and always very cold. Since we couldn't use the fireplace in the room for heat, we resorted to leaving the oven door open to try and generate more heat in the morning and later at night.

The back of the house was three steps up from the main room and had a door that could close off the front room so it was always nice and toasty. The bedrooms were both good sized and the mattresses on the beds were firm and very comfortable. The bathroom was also nice in size but the water heater was not large and our showers had to be timed in the morning so there would be enough hot water.

There was a view of vineyards and other farmhouses from the windows. A chicken coop was located a little past our house, but that made it even more fascinating for our daughter!! It was nice to hear the roosters crowing in the morning!!

I would definitely rent this property again!! There were some minor inconveniences, but that is all part of the countryside experience!
