Review 1121: Venice Rentals, Scala de Bovolo
2bed/1.5bath apartment in San Marco, Venice
Sept 2004, 3 days
The apartment is right across from the Contarini Scala Del Bovolo - the famous staircase in Venice. Because it's next to a tourist site, it is noisy during the day, but very quiet at night. The location can't be beat if you want to be close to shopping and San Marco Square.
You can walk everywhere in Venice. No large grocery stores, but there was a little market right in the next campo. There were restaurants and shops within a block or two of the apartment.
Being Venice, the building was very old and across from an historical site. There were 3 other apartments.
There was a roof top terrace that was just for the apartment we rented. It was very pretty, but voices echo and you were required to whisper if you were up there after dark.
Everything in the apartment was in very good shape and it was very clean and well appointed.
The beds were fine and both bedrooms were nice. There were two bathrooms. One with shower and tub and one with just a sink, toilet, and bidet. There was also a washing machine, but we didn't use it.
The kitchen was extremely user friendly - all the appliances worked. We cooked no full meals, but did use the toaster oven and coffee maker.
Problems or Bonuses
We were warned that the neighbors were very noise sensitive, but we did not realize how sensitive until they called our rental agent the first night we were there and said we were screaming and slamming doors in the middle of the night. In fact we were getting ready for bed and conversing, but we were being loud Americans, I'm sure. After that, we were very aware of how amplified our voices were due to the apartment's high ceilings and wood floors and spoke in very low tones the rest of the time. This is not the apartment for boisterous people.
I loved looking out at the window at Scala Del Bovolo everyday and the closeness to everything.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Denise and Maurizio at Venice Rentals were great. Denise met us and, since she's from Boston, was very easy to understand and extremely helpful. She pointed out the bank machines, great shops, where the grocery store was, etc. on the walk to apartment. In the apartment, she had also put together a book with restaurant recommendations, transportation info, etc.
We paid 225 Euros a night and the apartment was well worth it. It was exactly as advertised.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would stay at this apartment again. I would recommend it my friends who can speak in low tones and are in good shape as the apartment is up three flights of stairs.
Things to do in this area
Venice is quite small, so the apartment was actually within walking distance to everything. It was very close to San Marco and the Rialto bridge.
Restaurant we loved: Alle Madonna because our waiter was so friendly and helped us practice our Italian. La Zucca because the food was incredible and reasonably priced, if you like pumpkin - order the pumpkin flan. Taverna San Travoso because of the great atmosphere, huge portions, and great prices.
I'm not much of a shopper, but my friend loved the glove shops and stationary stores that seemed to be in abundance.
