5bed/6.5bath villa near Barberino Val D'Elsa, Tuscany Chianti

Oct 2004, 1 week

This property is within walking distance to the small town Barberino Val D'Elsa, but down a hill and in a valley. The views were spectacular. The bells from the town could be heard, but were not annoying. There was another building close to the main house, but it was not occupied at the time. The owner was there for one night.

Nearby Amenities

The house as I noted was in a valley, which meant a walk uphill to go to the town. This was taxing on our over 60 group, but we managed. I would suggest renting at least one car to ferry people to town if walking up steep hills is a problem. The town had all you would need. Stores, coffee shops, meat market, and two restaurants. We would highly recommend both of them. Also the bus stops in town to Florence and Siena.

The House/Apartment

The building was beautiful and had been renovated recently. We all had private baths which were huge, and the rooms were all huge.

There were many outside areas for relaxing and a beautiful pool, which was a bit cool in October. The pool was for the main house use only. There was also a loggia with table and chairs which we used both day and night.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The house was very spacious with all the amenities for a very large group. The sofas and chairs were all very comfortable and clean. There were more than enough tableware, comfy seats, quiet spots, music, glasses, etc. It was very clean, and price included a houseman for 3 days out of 7.

The beds were comfortable, although I considered our a little too soft. There were more than enough bathrooms for 9 of us. The only drawback was that 2 of the bedrooms only had bathrooms with tubs with hand-held showers. We opted to share the regular showers. Everything was up to date and we even all had bidets.

The kitchen was more than we needed as we did no major cooking. It included two stoves, 3 ovens, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, 2 sinks, dishwasher and a full-size refrigerator.

Problems or Bonuses

The only bad surprise was that the hill to town was so steep - we did not expect that. Younger people, or ones in more fit condition would find it less of a problem.

Some surprises were the gift basket left by the owner, both on arrival and on the last day, and the toiletries in each bathroom, which were wonderful.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We dealt primarily with the owner Flavia who was helpful and gracious. The villa was much better than we could have imagined, even with the photos on the internet.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would recommend the villa, it was a magical vacation for everyone.

Things to do in this area

While at the villa we hired drivers for a wine tour, and trips to Siena and Florence. This was money well spent, as none of us wanted to drive. We took the public bus to San Gimigiano. This involved transfering in Poggibonsi, and it was a long day. This was not our favorite town, too busy. Radda in Chianti was better, and the views were wonderful. Actually the down-time spent at the villa were the best days. Relaxing with good friends and good wine, what could be better?
