Review 1154: TuscanHouse, Fitto
6 bedroom farmhouse near Palazzone, Tuscany South
Oct 2 - 9, 2004, 1 week
We recently rented a farmhouse in Tuscany called Fitto from Tuscanhouse. The experience was less than satisfactory. It began with the road to the house which is described by Tuscanhouse as "rough". When I questioned Zak of Tuscanhouse about this description, I was assured that the road was easily travelable and of no concern. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The road is a quarter-mile of uphill gravel road with holes, dips and turns that bottomed out our rental car, causing significant damage. It is a road that should be traveled with a 4 wheel drive, SUV or high clearance vehicle-none of which we had.
Upon reaching Fitto, we were greeted by a swarm of bees feeding or nested on the house itself and directly in line to the entrance. The vegetation where the bees were located was removed some days later, but the bees simply moved a few feet to another growth on the house and continued to be an issue throughout our stay.
Dealing with bees on the outside was a prelude to the multitude of insects, crawling and flying, on the inside of the house. These, combined with the dirt and cobwebs inside the house, made for an unpleasant experience. We also had a gas leak while there, which, we believe, accounted for the exhorbitant bill we received for gas usage (70 euros) for 5 days.
Finally, setting aside minor inconveniences such as no toilet paper, no coffee maker and towels the size of hankerchiefs, there was no light outside the house from the car park to the entrance -- so that 9 people had to grope their way to the house every evening in complete darkness.
All in all, not an experience we would like to repeat.
