Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 1155: Owner, Casa Vacanza Lucca
2bed/1bath apartment in Lucca, Tuscany North
June 2003, one week
The apartment is located in the city of Lucca just inside the old city walls adjacent to other buildings and near to the train station. It's in a great location just behind the Church of San Martino and near to the lovely tree lined ramparts walk on the city walls.
Many local shops, cafes, and restaurants are only a short walk away but the fun thing to do is to rent a bicycle for the week from one of the many rental agencies and pedal around town like the locals do. Be sure to bicycle around the top circuit of the walls for a great view over Lucca.
The building is from the 1700's and was well cared for and clean. It is on the lower floor of a typical multi-family building and is in a fairy quiet area with views onto the old walls of the city.
Included for the guests was a simple private garden with lawn chairs, a table, and a barbeque. The area, which is a good size, is walled in for privacy.
Good quality furniture was the rule with numerous chairs, tables, a sofa, and a well equipped kitchen with a table and four chairs. The apartment met our expections and was clean and well maintained.
There were two private bedrooms and one shared bathroom off a hall. The main bedroom was large and had three big windows with comfortable beds and typical furniture for clothes storage. The second bedroom was smaller with two beds and two windows. The bathroom was large with modern fixtures. We were very pleased overall.
We really enjoyed using the kitchen and were able to cook complete meals with plenty of preparation and service pieces. We were pleased to see a good sized fridge included in the kitchen and as long as your needs are restricted to Tuscan/Italian cooking styles you will have no problems. With the great local shopping, fresh meats, cheeses, and olive oils, estate wines and all, we had great fun putting together our many meals.
Problems or Bonuses
As is typical of most Italian apartments, no car parking space is provided but near by, at the train station, you may park for free when space is available.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Booked directly with the owner. We paid 500 Euros in early June 2003 for two people. Daniela, the owner, was a delight to work with. She was very helpful in making suggestions of things to do and see locally and showed concern for our having a positive experience while in Lucca.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, we would stay here again and in fact are planning our return another year. The location is excellent and a car is not necessary.
Things to do in this area
The list of things to do in the area is extensive but if I had to choose I would of course include the wonderful city of Lucca itself, the towns of Barga and Bagni di Lucca, touring the lovely surrounding hills and historic villas, artdeco Viareggio and it's beaches, and easy train access to the nearby cities of Pisa and Florence.
Shopping in Lucca is above average with many upscale shops and delightful streets to wander. Summer brings antique fairs, major music festivals, concerts, and art shows to this delightful city.
One of our favorite things to do was to hop on our bikes and take our morning capuccino and cornetto at a great cafe/bakery just down the street from the apartment.
