Review 117: Umbria Holidays, Poggio alla Luna - Madre Terra
apartments near Bevagna, Umbria
We just spent ten days in Umbria. I do not have much of a trip report because we did not do much. But, what there is to tell is, Umbria is beautiful, someone on the AOL boards recommended it to me as a quiet, non touristy place to go (thank you, whoever that was.)
I want to recommend this farmhouse we stayed at. We stayed in Poggio alla Luna in the Madre Terra apartment (1bed/1bath). The whole place is restored and really, really nice. There is a great pool, and Rino, the owner, is awesome. We had reservations for July but at the last minute we needed to change to June, and he accommodated us. After a hot scary drive on the autostrada he had wine, water and cookies waiting for us, and the next day he brought us coffee and a fresh ball of mozzarella, he was so wonderful.
If you do consider staying here stay at Madre Terra or the unit next to it, make sure you have the patio overlooking the Spoleto valley. There are bikes to use and a big BBQ. There is a small, walled medieval town right down the street, Bevagna, and we happened to be there for their annual medieval festival, which was great. It would be worth it to go to Umbria at this time because there are lots of festivals.
We visited a lot of the towns of the region, Spoleto is beautiful, Perugia is grand, Todi is like completely stepping into the past. Just driving around on the back roads, with all the sunflowers and vineyards, was enough for me. I liked Umbria better than Tuscany (shhh.) But like I said we did not do too much, ate most meals at home, laid by the pool.
