Review 1199: Pie di Costa, Apartment
5 apartments on an estate in Montaione, near Florence, Tuscany Chianti
October - November 2004, 1 week
Pie di costa is apartments in a renovated farmhouse right outside the village of Montaione. The location was close enough to Montaione to be able to use it as a base to shop, to eat, to mooch around, but was private and peaceful like a country location, the views of the countryside were lovely. The apartment was mainly quiet although on several occasions we could very clearly hear the people in the next apartment (although they were talking extremely loudly).
I guess in theory you could walk to Montaione as it was close, but the walk would be all uphill on a narrow winding road that I wouldn't find safe to walk on. So we drove every time, there were several restaurants in Montaione, we ate in a couple of them; Carpe Diem and Corte Antica, both were excellent. We did some shopping at a small grocery, Villani e Valenti, they were extremely nice and helpful and actually recommended some restuarants to us.
The house was in good shape, I believe there were 3 or maybe 4 other apartments in the building.
Being there in October/November we didn't take advantage of the outdoor areas, but there was a pool, as well as an outdoor area to sit with several garden type lounge chairs, I'm sure it would be wonderful in July. I believe every apartment had its own private outdoor area, be it a patio or a deck, or balcony.
The furnishings were nice, although a bit spartan, there was a couch, but no chairs or coffee table, a TV, but no radio (we bought one while we were there). The bed was nice; there was a big wardrobe and nightstands. Our biggest complaint was with the lighting; we joked about going out and buying brighter bulbs, all the light fixtures had very low wattage bulbs making it difficult to see.
The bed was comfortable, and the bedroom was lovely and dark at night, there were shutters on all the windows. There was one bathroom, with toilet, bidet and shower, the shower was powerful and the water got plenty hot.
The kitchen was nice, there were plenty of pots and pans, plates and cups and cutlery. There was a gas stove. We ate breakfast there in the mornings and cooked dinner once.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We dealt with the owner, Filippo, he was very helpful and spoke excellent English. We only saw him the day we arrived and the day before we left, but we had contact numbers and were able to call him if need be. He had a booklet of information he gave us when we arrived, with restaurants, shops, train schedules, etc, which was very helpful. Everything was as it was represented on the website.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would recommend Pie di Costa to others, although I would definitely recommend that they bring a radio and light bulbs.
Things to do in this area
We spent time walking around Montaione and ate at several of the restaurants. We also used it as a base to go to Certaldo, San Gimignano, San Miniato, Volterra, Siena, Castellina in Chianti. We went to Florence on the train from Castelfiorentino, very convenient, the train station was only about 9KM away. We loved the scenery of the area, Corte Antica in Montaione was an excellent restaurant, wonderful food and great service.
