apartments in the village Lucignano, Tuscany East WhenJuly 2004, 1 week LocationIl Cassero is located in a medieval town, Lucigano, which is located near Arezzo and Cortona. The property is a family home in the walls of the town; there are about 5 apartments available on the third and fourth floors of the house. I recommend Lucignano highly; it's a lovely town, and is a great location from which to explore Eastern Tuscany and Umbria. Nearby AmenitiesThis village is ideal for the renter; there are two small groceries within a block, several other shops (wine, butcher, etc.) close by, and two OK gelaterias near. The location of Il Cassero is perfectly situated at the main gate to the interior of the town. No cars are permitted within the walls of the town, but there is parking available in the garden of the property. The House/ApartmentThe house is a large rambling manor house situated within the walls of the town. Parts of it date back to the 14th century, according to the owner, Luigi. The town is pretty quiet, and the walls of the house are thick; the apartment we rented (Il rustico) was very quiet and peaceful. We also had a view in two directions - to the interior of the town and to the exterior, overlooking the 14th century tower. On the whole the apartment (2bed/1bath) was in good shape, and it was very clean, but it is rustic; this is not a property that offers fancy kitchen ranges or a 'luxury' ambiance. This is an apartment carved out of the top floor of an old manor house and was the least luxurious of the apartments offered in Il Cassero. There were a few small inconsistencies, such as a broken shower door, and a lack of decent cooking equipment, but the apartment was very nice on the whole and I would recommend it to anyone and return myself. GardenThere is a shared garden area that is quite lovely. Part of it also functions as a parking lot but the garden area was beautiful and a very nice place to sit and enjoy the company of the family's very nice dog and two cats. There is a very old well and some lovely rose bushes. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe apratment (Il Rustico) was very clean, in good shape (on the whole) and the furniture was clean and comfortable. The kitchen area is quite small; this is not an apartment in which to host a fancy dinner party, but it is very nice for a small family or two to four people. We were three, and were very comfortable. Bedrooms/BathroomsThere are two bedrooms, both comfortable, and one bathroom. They were clean and spacious. KitchenThe kitchen is rudimentary, and the supply of utensils and pots limited. I had no trouble cooking in it - everything worked fine - but it is a small kitchen, with three chairs only and almost no room to move about. Agency and Representatives (and price)We booked with InTuscany and I was very impressed by them. They were very responsive to all of our questions and the transaction was very smooth. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Yes, I recommend this rental, and I would return. The prospective renter should know that this property is also a family home, and to enter the apartment area one has to enter the front door of the house; the family area is to the left, and the stairway to the rentals to the right. This might not appeal to everyone, espcially if a very private location is desired. The owner is a very nice man who enjoys talking with his guests and telling them stories of the house and the town; once again, this might not appeal to everyone, but we found him to be very kind and congenial. The pool area is approximately 3/4 mile away from the rental, on property the family owns outside of the walls of the town. The pool is lovely, beautifully maintained, and has a wonderful view, but you are not going to stroll outside of your apartment and dive into the pool - you will have to walk or drive! Things to do in this areaThere are many many towns nearby if you have a car. Lucignano is a peaceful and lovely place on its own; great for strolling/walking, provides several lovely small piazzas, and there are free concerts once a week in the summer. It's a lovely area - highly recommended! This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
