2bed/1bath near Piazza del Popolo, Rome WhenNovember 2004, one week ReviewMaxo’s Flat is a cozy (by which I don’t mean small – it feels nice and spacious), clean, convenient apartment that is a great home base for exploring Rome – ESPECIALLY if you have a child or two under five. We arrived in the morning at FCO, bedraggled after a long flight from the U.S. and a change of planes in Milan, and found that our luggage would not be joining us until that evening, having remained in Milan. Our driver left because we waited so long in baggage claim and we had to pay to get him back. All of which is to say that when we finally arrived at the apartment and found ourselves warmly welcomed by the owners, Max and Marji (the latter a native English-speaker who is fluent in Italian) and their two adorable children, we could not have been happier with our choice of accommodation. Of course, since we were traveling with a three-year-old, the most important thing was that the place was full of toys and children’s books (in English, French, and Italian)! Marji also will leave you her laptop with high-speed Internet connection and a cell phone. Wow! Our trip was a little more business-based than leisure-based, so we didn’t have typical tourist requirements. The apartment is an easy tram ride to Piazza del Polpolo, and from there you can get anywhere. But it isn’t right in the middle of things, so if your goal is to walk to sights with frequent breaks back at the apartment, this might not be the right choice. On the other hand, what is wonderful is that when you walk out the door of the building you’re in a Roman neighborhood, not immediately part of the tourist throng. I found this very, very nice, giving us a little break from feeling that we had to be constantly watchful of our bags and pockets! Marji has compiled a notebook full of information – maps and tips and lots of helpful local recommendations – and she is herself willing to help however she can. We look forward to staying at Maxo’s flat again. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
