Review 1277: Ville in Italia, Villa Praoili

Review by Jane from CA who is a SlowTrav Contributor

4 bed/4bath villa in Riposto, Sicily

Ionian Sea from Villa Veranda, photo by Jane Parker

October 2004, 1 week

Villa Praoili is located on the east side of Sicily between Taormina and Acireale or Catania. It is in the country (the entire area is country) along the route for the small fishing villages that define this coastline. It is set in the middle of a lemon tree nursery with views of Mt. Etna from one side and the Ionian Sea from the other. It is totally private.

We loved the area as we enjoyed meandering the fishing villages and the day trips to Taormina, Sircusa, Mt. Etna and other places.

Nearby Amenities

It is not possible to walk to anyplace from here except down to the sea. There are no facilities near enough to walk to. A car is necessary. A large mall with a grocery store and typical mall stores is 5-10 minutes away. Closer are green grocers, bread, butcher, gelato, post office and other small businesses.

The House/Apartment

Everything about the villa is beautiful - setting, furnishings, decorative touches, views, amenities, etc. The kitchen is absolutely beautiful and modern with every conceivable applicance, pan, dish, serving piece. Each bedroom has a color scheme carried through to its own private bath - including plush, terry robes and towels.

On the ground level is an old wine making facility with old presses, wheels, baskets and spiders. It is as if it has all been left as it was the last day it produced wine - very intriguing.

The grounds are lovely with a beautiful pool, grassy expanses, and acres of lemon trees. There is a veranda that runs completly around the villa with a large dining area on one side. There are large French windows leading out from every room. Lounging furniture is in place.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The villa is spotless and the furniture of high quality. The interior decoration of the villa is lovely. Beds were very comfortable.

Beds are very comfortable and each bedroom has its own private bath. Each bedroom has a beautiful view of either Mt.Etna or the Ionian Sea.

There is an exquisite kitchen.

Problems or Bonuses

The caretaker's wife will prepare dinner any night you would like her to - and she is a wonderful cook. She prepares typical Sicilian food. She provides a list of what she offers and then you select from the list. This is done a day ahead of time so that she can then get the appropriate vegetables, meat, fish, etc. She prepares it in her living quarters (downstairs) and delivers it.

The owners, Vera and Francesco Greco are wonderful. They live in Acireale but stop by daily to see if there is anything you need. If there is the slightest problem they address it immediately. They go far of their way to assist and be helpful.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We highly recommend Ville In Italia. They delivered on all promises and demonstrated a commitment to servicing clients well. I can not speak highly enough about them. We had originally been scheduled for another rental but at the last minute there was a problem. Ville in Italia e-mailed us and offered us the villa - which rents for $1000 a week more than we were paying - at no extra cost. To us - that is integrity.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely would stay here again - in a heartbeat. I think of it every day.

Things to do in this area

See restaurants in that review section. From the villa you can day trip many places - Taormina, Piazza Armerina, Sircusa, Mt. Etna, and lots more.
