Review 1289: Grifoglia, Apartment
apartments on a farm near Barga, north of Lucca, Tuscany North
July 2004, two weeks
Two weeks in a beautiful apartment in a renovated two-hundred year old farm house with good friends in two adjacent apartments in Grifoglia in the Tuscan hills turned out to be just as wonderful as it sounded when we started planning it.
Grifoglia owners, Kerry Bell and Pietro Messina, were/are incredible hosts, whether checking in to see if we needed anything, giving us the history of the area, explaining the local culture, bringing just-picked vegetables from the artfully planted garden, or joining us for afternoon “aperativo” when invited.
An added highlight was our arrival in the middle of the restoration of a 60-year-old chapel on the Grifoglia grounds where we could observe old-world craftsmanship, uses of indigenous materials, and artisans in action.
Day trips to Florence, Lucca, and the Cinque Terre as well as hikes to a nearby village for lunch and a Saturday farmer’s market in the mountain village of Barga provided us with full days, but at a delightfully wonderful pace. Whether lounging around the in-ground pool with your favorite books, hiking the country roads to the nearby village, or taking an afternoon siesta, Grifoglia is a truly wonderful slow-travel experience. It gets ***** from us!
