Review 1292: Sant' Antonio, Apartment

Review by kristin from VA

apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

September 2004, one week

I only wish that the Slow Travel website would let me say YES YES YES when asked if I would recommend Sant' Antonio to others. It was, in a word, fantastic.

My husband and I spent a week at Sant' Antonio in mid-September. A drive through the entry gate leads you up to the estate, an old monastery that sits like a quiet, beautiful sanctuary. The hills roll out in all directions like a quilt dotted with olive and fruit trees. I couldn't wait to get up every morning, open our heavy wooden shutters to look out at the hills and the sun. It is no wonder that immediately after leaving, we began plotting our return visit to Sant Antonio.

We rented a well-appointed two bedroom apartment that featured a sitting room and full kitchen with anything you'd need (it even had a hearth, though I was never that ambitious). The rooms and beds were comfy and the original frescos in the sitting room left me feeling very, well, noble. The grounds and pool were perfect for wandering and lounging, and you feel very much at home. There are decks and grills tucked away outside if you feel like cooking or eating al fresco. The whole compound has been beautifully restored and the other rooms that we could see were likewise well appointed. (Their website has some great pictures.)

Sant' Antonio is located near the heart of Montepulciano, Montalcino, Monteciello and Pienza. A short distance away are Siena, Cortona and Bagno Vignoni. In other words, a quick drive in any direction takes you to some of the best food and wine - ever.

But the best part of the experience are the owners, Nico and his wife Elena. It felt like we were in Italy visiting friends. Whether we were looking for a place to eat or talking about wine (something my husband and Nico can do for a very, very long time) or just felt like chatting someone up, everyone was helpful, welcoming, and yep, fantastic. Because of them, we had a tremendous time and I cannot think of going back to Italy without a visit.

I am so glad we found Sant' Antonio (thanks Slow Travel!) and hope others enjoy it as much as we did. Itís magic.
