Review 1294: Castello in Bisticci, Alcove Apartment
apartments in castle near Florence, Tuscany Chianti
From the end of July to the end of December, 2004, Five months
Bisticci is the smallest town I have ever visited. It is not actually even a town. A total of five people live there, and there are only two homes. It is, by far, the most charming place I have ever seen.
Bisticci is up five hundred meters on a mountain way out in the country. It over looks a valley leaving a view that is breath taking! Bisticci is also a very quiet and private place. Sometimes I would go days without even seeing anyone (except my roommates). I fell in love with Bisticci. It is the ideal vacation rental.
Bisticci is out in the country. There are plenty of great restaurants and grocery stores close by, but you must drive. The CO-OP (grocery store) is a ten to fifteen minute ride.
Castello in Bisticci has been renovated several times through the ages, but it was first built in the eleventh century. It remains in very good shape and "The Alcove Apartment" was just renovated before I arrived. There was one other rental space within the castle, but it was unoccupied. Both rental spaces have been sealed off from the rest of the castle, so it truly is your own apartment.
My roommates and I were given our own garden full of shrubs and fruit trees. It was amazing to sit at the table in the garden for mealtime. As we ate, we looked out into the beautiful Tuscan valley with the sweet smell of the fruit trees filling the air. There also is a rose bush and a small stonewall for flowerpots.
Inside "The Alcove Apartment" was brand new furniture, couches, cutlery, plates, bowls, teapot etc... It was very clean and we had everything we needed even dishwasher soap. The kitchen table is large and has six chairs around it. The living room has two sofas, a marble table, an amazing fireplace, and a few indoor plants-plenty of open space.
The beds were actually custom made just before we arrived. Cid and Francesco (the owners) had these beautiful antique bed frames, but they were so old they did not match modern bed sizes. So Cid and Francesco had mattresses custom made to fit the old frames, and the beds were very comfortable.
Both of the bedrooms had cool old windows looking out into the garden. The windows let in plenty of sunlight and also had shutters for darkness. Both of the bedrooms were fully furnished with tasteful wooden desks, tables, closets, and chairs.
There is only one bathroom in "The Alcove Apartment". It is medium sized, but just renovated so it is very clean and stylish.
The kitchen is huge. It came equipped with an entire pot and pan set, plus all the dishes you would need. Cooking in Italy are some of my most cherished memories. My roommates and I would make dinner together EVERY night. It is easy to cook in this kitchen; there is plenty of space to spread out and to be doing more than one thing at a time.
Problems or Bonuses
I strongly recommend renting a car if you are going to live in Bisticci.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
My roommates and I did not book with an agency; we dealt with Cid and Francesco. Cid and Francesco are the two most friendly and helpful people you could ask for!! The both speak perfect English, and they are really easy to get along with. Bisticci is much more beautiful and enchanting than the website can even portray. The price was 1,000 euro per month.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I recommend Bisticci to anyone who is looking for some bliss out in the country. Check out the website for pictures and information.
Things to do in this area
One thing you must do..... Get gelato at "Orso Ghioto". It is the best ice cream in the world.
