Review 1295: Grifoglia, Apartment

Review by Marguerite & Norm from US

apartments on a farm near Barga, north of Lucca, Tuscany North

July 2004, 2 weeks

This beautiful old farmhouse is in the chestnut forest near the old city of Barga, north of Lucca. You climb into the hills from the Serchio River Valley and pass through the small town of Coreglia Antelmineli past an ancient aquaduct and cross the bridge over the river canyon. From this lush hideaway one can walk to the river or the nearby small towns, or simply relax and gaze at the view. It's so pretty that on my computer at the office I have a large photograph of the view of the mountains looking past the vegetable garden just below the apartment.

Nearby Amenities

We enjoyed a few long, beautiful walks into town for lunch and groceries, but more often we stopped to shop and dine while out sightseeing in the car during the day.

The House/Apartment

The old buildings were lovingly restored and remodeled by the owners with fine quality materials and craftsmanship. The furnishings are simple and elegant and the linens are impeccable. We so enjoyed the peaceful setting with the rushing river below and the sound of bees buzzing in the lavender on the terrace. There are three separate apartments - small, medium and large. We enjoyed the largest apartment, the two-story Barn - and the smaller studio apartment, too.

After spending our days sightseeing in nearby towns like Florence and Lucca, we enjoyed returning to our hideaway each evening for happy hour and a homemade dinner which included vegetables provided by our host, Pietro, from his prolific garden. But some days we just stayed home and relaxed by the pool and read books while the kitties played around us on the patio. Each apartment has its own patio furniture but we combined it to accommodate our group of six and often more to watch the light slowly fade on the facing mountainsides after dinner alfresco.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Our hosts Kerry and Pietro bring together their impressive skills from the hospitality and fashion industries to create an environment which is not only clean and comfortable, but beautiful.

The bedrooms and bathrooms were perfectly adequate for our needs and the beds were very comfortable.

We enjoyed cooking many meals and often collaborated with our friends on group efforts. The kitchens had plenty of dishes and pans and our hosts provided the basics for breakfast, including coffee and coffee pots!

Problems or Bonuses

Everything about Grifoglia was a pleasant surprise!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Our charming hosts made our stay so memorable - and since Kerry and Pietro are multilingual, they were able to help us plan our outings, explain local customs and share with us some of the interesting local history.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

It's so lovely I can't wait to go back! I have definitely recommended it to friends and acquaintances.
