Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 1298: Owner, Villino Matilde
2bed/1bath house in Santa Margherita Ligure, Liguria
October 2004, one week
This small house is located on a relatively quiet street about 5 minutes by foot from the very center of Santa Margherita Ligure (SML). It's quite convenient by foot (maybe 10 minutes) to the train station from which trains service much of the Italian Riviera including Cinque Terre, Camogli, Genoa. It's a 20 minute bus ride or boat ride to Portofino; a wonderful walk along the water takes about an hour.
The house is in a mostly residential area although next door to a bed and breakfast which is owned by the house owner's parents.
You can walk to all the necessary places; supermercado is 5 minutes walk, other specialty food stores the same. Restaurants are quite convenient located throughout SML and within walking distance.
It's a small house that affords privacy and space and is fine for sleeping in relative quiet with only the occasional vespa-type cycle shattering the peace.
There is a small pleasant garden with sitting area. We used it extensively for lunch and pre-dinner antipasti as well as lounging in the sun with a good book. It is a private garden with privacy.
Very clean two story house. Plenty of chairs and room to eat in the kitchen.
Beds were fine. One king size bed in the larger bedroom and twin beds in the second bedroom. We flipped for the king size bed (I was the lucky one) my friend occupied the second bedroom and my adult son decided for a "snore-free" night by sleeping on the good sized couch in the living room.
Kitchen was fine although we did very little cooking (actually none). We ate breakfasts there and fixed plenty of cheese and great Italian snacks to indulge ouselves with wine.
The kitchen has a dishwasher and washing machine. It's well equipped with dishes, pans, etc.
Problems or Bonuses
Pretty much as promised. A big advantage was that this was one of the few apartments or small houses in SML that was quite reasonable to rent.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We negotiated with the owners who were quite responsive. Marco and Cristina were avaliable by cell phone and her father was available also in the event there were problems. She and her father speak English very well. Her husband, Marco, does not.
Rental for one week (in October) was 800 euro (which included cleaning charge) for three people.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would definitely stay there again. Very convenient location, plenty of room in a very clean, well-equipped home. If a small family or three singles want to headquarter in the Italian Riviera, this is a good option.
Things to do in this area
Easy traveling to Genoa, Cinque Terre, Rapallo, Portofino, Camogli. There are walking trails, ease of train, bus and boat transportation.
Plenty of good restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Michele in SML and Ristorante da Paolo on Via S. Fortunato in Camogli.
One word of caution: this area is not cheap and ranks a bit higher (in my opinion) compared to rural areas of Italy. But not a major factor.
