Review 1304: Owners Syndicate, Poggio Aquilone
apartments near Marsciano, Umbria
October 2003, 1 week
The accommodations "Casa Vacanza Poggio Aquilone" is a little out in the wild of deepest Umbria. It is in a small hamlet that we quite liked but that would not suit everybody. There are 4 other accommodations for holiday lets all quite private.
No nearby amanities and a 20 minute drive to the nearest shops.
The accommodation was historical, it was made from the curtain wall of the former castle but we didn't know that until we arrived. It was not in good shape. It was dark, dank, malodourous and humming with the sound of wood boring insects!!
We were moved to another apartment that was in better order but all in all this is a warning to all ST's to cross reference any proposed holiday letting and not trust an agent even though you may have used them many times before. The Owners Syndicate let us down badly as this accommodation was not at all as described so I would caution you to search thorouhgly if you are thinking of using them. The description of the properties has now been modified but it is still too flowery and still paints an inaccurate picture.
We had use of the Owner's lovely pool and garden. I noted that all the things the Owners used were in tip top shape!!
Everything was worn out and past it's sell-by date. Curtains were faded and in need of dry cleaning as were the counterpanes in both properties. The second property was of an acceptable standard.
The first bed was indescriabably uncomfortable the second bed was fine. The first bathroom was hideous, malodorous, dark and worn out. The second bathroom was fine.
Kitchenettes were not very good in either property.
Problems or Bonuses
The surprises were unpleasant. It seemed to me that the Female half of the ownership has obviously grown bored with her holiday accommodations and consequently we felt uncomfortable all the time we were there.
For example, upon arrival we were met by a child and shown to our accommodation whereupon the door was pushed open and we were then were left to our own devices. There was sign up saying that the water was not drinkable but no bottled water had been left for us.
The wood gnawing beetles were also a surprise!! Richard is well qualified to know what is what in this department as he is an Environmental Health Officer but the Owner insisted he knew nothing about the very loud cacophony from this colony that had been at home for many years. The noise in the bedroom could be heard from the downstairs room!! The second property had the same problem but in an area where you couldn't hear them at night!!!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Owners Syndicate - very very poor service indeed from Carolina De Cappell Brooke. Upon making an emergency phone call to say we could not accept the standards of our holiday property so we had nowhere to sleep, she took 2 days to call back. Thankfully we were prepared to move out and upon seeing this the Male half of the ownership showed us to a bigger apartment in much better condition so we were able to stay.
He was polite and friendly throughout and obviously embarassed by the conditions we had to endure.
Upon disputing the conditions we found and the inconvenience we had been put through the agent was non accepting and extremely rude. Upon referring the matter to her boss, he was extremely apolgetic and helpful and we received compensation.
The rental price was way too high and the whole thing badly misjudged.
