Review 1305: Gorgacce Rentals, Ca' Spadolino
3bed/2bath house in Spello, Umbria
February 2004, 7 days
Spello is a small and beautiful hill town - a maze of narrow streets and alleyways. A lovely place to stay with good views across the plain to the surrounding mountains.
Selection of restaurants and grocery stores within close walking distance. The train station is about 20-25 minutes walk from the house - down a steep hill.
All the properties in Spello are historical and full of character and this is no exception. It was in good condition and relatively peaceful. Although the streets are very narrow and traffic is supposed to be restricted there are quite a lot of cars about, but not enough to spoil your enjoyment. The agents have a number of other apartments in the house opposite.
There is a small roof terrace with a table and chairs and great views.
The house was clean and well furnished. The first floor has one room which serves as a sitting room, dining room and kitchen. The room is very narrow, and it was just OK for our party of 5. Don't expect to lay out a big banquet on the tiny dining table! If you are looking for a lot of space to lounge about, this house might disappoint. If you are more interested in the location and the character, it will be ideal.
Two double bedrooms, one with an ensuite bathroom with shower. Both were large and well furnished with good beds. One smaller room with a single bed and large wardrobe. A second bathroom with a bath is in the hallway. Both bathrooms were fine.
The kitchen is tiny but has a proper cooker and a large fridge with a medium sized freezer compartment. There were enough pots and pans of reasonable quality. There is a lack of work surfaces, so elaborate cooking would be more difficult, but perfectly adequate.
Problems or Bonuses
There is a permanent internet connection included in the price. This wasn't working during our week, probably due to a previous guest changing settings. The agents made some efforts to sort it out but didn't succeed. If you absolutely must have internet access you might be advised to double check this with the agents.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked through Gorgacce Rentals and their service was fine. They responded immediately by email to all enquiries. The properties are managed by In Urbe from an office next to the house. They were very helpful and friendly. We arrived late due to a train strike and they offered to pick us up in two cars from the the main station at Foligno, and then drove us to the station on our return. Very good service.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Highly recommended if you want to stay in a small and relatively quiet hill town. The house is lovely, but bear in mind the small size of the living/dining/kitchen area. Spello has a train station with regular services towards Rome and Florence. Timetables can be a bit awkward though - if you don't have a car, check the timetables carefully. You can travel more easily from nearby Foligno (€16 by taxi from Spello).
Things to do in this area
There are several upmarket shops selling local olive oil, wine, pasta, etc. They tend to be pricey but the quality is very high. There are a couple of small grocers which are cheaper and just as good. There's a small bakery just a few doors down from the house.
