Review 1328: Pie di Costa, Girasole

Review by Carole Andregg from WA

5 apartments on an estate in Montaione, near Florence, Tuscany Chianti

June 2004, 3 weeks

This 5 apartment/farmhouse was just on the outskirts of Montaione. It was in a beautiful and quiet area with vineyard/olive grove views, very private but not too remote.

Nearby Amenities

The walk into town wasn't far (10 minutes) but on a very narrow road with poor visibility around corners and all uphill. In town there were 2 ample grocery stores, a bank, post office, small shops, a good pizza place, a couple of cafes and a good spot for gelato. The owner gave us a great personal guide to the areas best restaurants, which we frequented, but none were in Montaione proper.

The House/Apartment

The charming Farmhouse had been recently renovated into 5 apartments that were very clean and well decorated. We stayed in one of the lower aprtments and found the tile floors/bathroom plumbing to be quite noisy when the people above us were up and around earlier or later than us.

The grounds surrounding the rental are very well manicured and charming. There are several thatched umbrella covered eating areas, one close to the pool. Each apartment has their own private patio or terrace with dining table/chairs. There is a medium sized pool that was clean but cool, but we were there at the begining of summer. Very nice chaise lounges surround the pool on the patio or grassy areas, many with thatched umbrellas for shade.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture complimented the Tuscan feel of the farmhouse, was in good shape and nothing was missing. The apartment was very clean, but I was surprised that we had to clean our own place for 3 weeks instead of it being cleaned at the end of each week like the other apartments. We stayed in Girasole and there was no livingroom to speak of, but plenty of room in the dining room and terrace to relax.

The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were simple but charming, clean and light. We had one bathroom for the 4 of us and that was plenty of room, although it would have been nice to have some where to put toiletries and hair essentials, there was only a pedastle sink, no counter at all.

We enjoyed using the kitchen very much, it had pretty much everything we needed and we cooked every breakfast and many other meals without any problem. The dishwasher was great, a must when staying 3 weeks, and the stovetop and seperate oven worked fine. There was a good sized farm table that sat six easily.

Problems or Bonuses

We were interested in tasting the wine made from the surrounding vineyards owned by the proprietors and they gave us a bottle to try at no charge, we thought that was very generous. The owner was very willing to help us with any reservations/information we needed during our stay.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

It was very easy to correspond with the owner via email. His English is very good and he responded in a timely manner. We were there in shoulder season (June) and paid 780 euros a week, incredible for what you get. The website left almost nothing to the imagination, showing many pictures of each apartment, their floor plans, and many pics of the grounds and local town.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for quiet country retreat with great access to main roads, train (10 minutes away) and within walking distance to a small quaint town with all amenities.

Things to do in this area

We visited San Gimignano twice and just loved it. Pisa, Siena and Florence are all under an hour away. Chianti region is very close and was one of our best days. A small restaurant in Mura called Il Caminetto, recommended by the owner, just 5 minutes away was our fav local spot, ate there many time.
