Review 1353: Tuscany Net, Casa Prato

Review by PegMcNeill from MD

4bed/4bath house in Lamole near Greve, Tuscany Chianti

March 18 - 25, 2005, one week

We had a truly wonderful week at Casa Prato, an old stone house located in Lamole, small village on top of mountain 9km from Greve in Chianti. House is attached stone house in a row of 3 along a little footpath, casa prato is the middle house but the walls are so thick there is no noise from the road or the houses on either side. Casa prato has a garden across the path with tables and chairs for outdoor eating and a back garden as well.

Lamole is a tiny village with a castle, an excellent restaurant ristoro lamole, and a small shop which is actually attached to the restaurant and sells milk bread cheese etc. The mountain top location is wonderful but its a long windy road up and down from the main chiantigana S222.

The house has three floors, a downstairs with one bedroom, a small kitchen, and two sofa/beds that can be rented as a separate apartment, a main floor with a kitchen, living room/dining room, and bedroom, andtwo upstairs bedrooms. There are three bathrooms, one shared upstairs, one on main floor, one downstairs. Kitchen has a dishwasher, sink, fridge, stove no microwave. Plenty of dishes, pots, towels, etc. We actually added a french press coffee pot to the italian iron expresso coffee maker that was there. The living room has two seating areas both comfortable and a nice antique dining table.

Most of the furniture was antiques. House was comfortable, a little cold when we first got there but has central heating and warmed up after first night. We had to pay extra for heat butit was not a lot. Beds were very comfortable. We loved the owner of the house, Marina, who has a french country gift shop in Panzano in Chianti. She was warm and welcoming, brought us firewood, left us wine to welcome us, we just loved her. Marina does not speak much English (she is learning) but does speak French. I speak some Italian and my sister who went with us speaks French so we managed. We brought small house gifts (soaps, dishtowels) for Marina and she was so pleased.

I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a comfortable place to stay, not terribly fancy, but very comfortable. The big plus is the location up on the mountain top with great views all around and the wonderful restaurant in Lamole. We made friends with one of the restaurant owners, Phillippo, who speaks some English and is very nice. Ate a wonderful dinner at the restaurant two of our 7 nights and did not find any other restaurant that we liked better.

The house is near enough to Greve in Chianti for shopping at the market and Panzano is also very close. We found the location to be wonderful for touring around vineyards and small Chianti towns as well as driving into Siena. There is a bus to Florence that goes from Greve so that was easy as well. Only downside of house was a small electrical problem that blew fuses if dishwasher and all the lights were on. Marina was getting that fixed. We loved Casa Prato and Lamole.
