Apartments and suites in a castle in Proceno, Lazio WhenApril 2005, 3 days LocationThe castle is located in downtown Proceno, population 633. It is about a fifteen minute drive to the boarder of Tuscany. Being on a hilltop the views are fantastic. Nearby AmenitiesYou can walk to any place in Proceno in five minutes. There was one bar, two grocery stores, and one restuarant only open on the weekends. The House/ApartmentThis is a 12th century castle that is in great shape. Everything is peaceful, there is nothing going on in Proceno. There are several other apartments but we neither heard or saw them except at dinner in the castle restuarant. GardenThere is a beautiful garden on several levels that was shared by all the apartments. There was a pool surronded by gardens with a poolside restaurant. Neither the pool or the poolside restaurant was open during our stay. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasEverything was very clean and well maintained. There was a couch and two upholstered chairs in the living area a table and four chairs in the dining area. Many antiques decorated the apartment including the hutch which held very nice dishes and glasses. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms were nicely decorated. The bathroom was average but clean and modern. KitchenThe kitchen was very tiny, one person at a time could be in it. There were enough pots and pans and dishware and it was in good shape. There was little counter space and cooking a big meal could be difficult. Problems or BonusesSignora Bisoni was very charming and helpful. She opened the restaurant on Wednesday night since we and several other guests had arrived that day. Tours of the castle are given on Tuesdays but since we wouldn't be there on a Tuesday she gave us the tour on Thursday. The tour was the best part of our visit. Signora Bisoni is very knowledgeable of the castle and it's history, it has been in her family for 500 years, and she is very proud of it. There are more antiques in her home than many museums. The Etruscan pottery alone would be the envy of any museum. Agency and Representatives (and price)We dealt directly with Signora Bisoni and she was prompt in answering e-mail questions and speaks perfect English. The website accurately reflects the apartments. We paid 145 euro a night in April 2005. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would highly recommend this rental to others. This place requires a car and you will have to drive to Acquapendenta for lunch or dinner, except on the weekends. Things to do in this areaThe castle restaurant is very good and reasonably priced. The restaurant is filled with antiques and is built into the castle walls. The castle is about fifteen minutes from Acquapendenta, about forty-five minutes from Orvieto and lake Bolsena. Viterbo is about an hour away. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
