Review 144: Le Case Gialle, Il Sartino

Review by Deb and Rick from Toronto

cottage/apartments on farm near Bevagna, Umbria

October 2001, 1 week

Located in Gualdo Cattaneo, this renovated farm property is a 10 minute drive from Bevagna, 20 minutes drive to Monefalco and Foligno, and within 30 45 minutes drive to many other towns including Todi, Trevi, Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia. It is also easy to drive to Orvieto, and the south central towns of Tuscany. It took us just under 2 hours to go Pienza, for the lovely luncheon sponsored by TuscanHouse and hosted by Pauline and Steve.

There is one converted house made into four apartments, and a small one-room house which is yards away from the main dwelling. We stayed in the apartment "il Sartino". The bedroom was of good size with a king-size bed (two comfy mattresses). There is a separate kitchen/family room with a sofa bed, a table with four chairs, a satellite T.V., a working wood fireplace, a kitchen cook-top with 4 burners, a granite countertop, a good size sink and small refrigerator. The floor area was quite spacious. The bathroom was small but very functional. The water pressure was strong, and we experienced no black-outs etc. The house is located on top of a hill, so the scenery is wonderful.

The furnishings were simple, but quality tuscan style, and the serving dishes were stylish and contemporary. The apartments are very new (3 years, I think) and are intelligently designed for comfort. While each apartment was unique, I think all were equal in quality and style even though there is a size difference. They all had separate outdoor sitting areas.

Mauro and Silvana were previously advertising executives, who left the big city life and all it stresses to start the small farm and tourist stay. They speak good and sometimes entertaining English. They are very interested in attracting the adult market, but children are welcome. Even though the apartments were solidly booked, it was very quiet and private.

What added to the wonderful stay, was the every morning drop-off of fresh organic bread and an English newspaper. We also received a welcome basket of goodies from their garden as well as their organic olive oil, honey and fig jam. Even through the week, Silvana dropped off seasonal veggies etc. I had no problem using these offerings in my evening dinner preparation.

We booked this apartment directly with the owners via their website.
