Review 1472: InTuscany, Tenuta Lupinari

Review by Michel Kruithof from Switzerland

apartments on an estate near Bucine, Tuscany Chianti

21 - 28 August 2005, 1 week

From the beautiful estate with its magnificent castle situated on a hill overlooking vineyards and olive trees it is only about half an hours drive to Siena to the west, to the heart of the Chianti region to the north and to Arrezzo towards east.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest supermarket and restaurants are less than 10 minutes drive away. The estate has a very nice restaurant where - on request - you can have breakfast and dinner (fixed 4 courses - very nice, no a la carte).

The House/Apartment

The apartments seem quite new and built and furnished in very nice Tuscan style. The whole estate comprises about 10 apartments, each with own private entrances and terraces.

Each apartment has its own private sitting area or terrace and there is a large shared terrace at the front of the estate as well where you can enjoy a nice aperatif before dinner. From the pool you can enjoy nice views to the castle and over olive tree fields.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment we had was very spacious (80 m2) and comfortable and was kept clean every day. There was more than enough space in the living room and the dining area as well as on the terrace (with beautiful view of the castle) for the two of us.

The bedroom was very spacious and the king size bed was very comfortable. Our apartment had one large bathroom with toilet and shower.

The kitchen was definitely usable for preparing breakfast, light lunch or a simple pasta dinner. We never cook full meals ourselves when we are in Italy - we leave this to the local cooks to do this for us! An additional socket in the kitchen to plug in the toaster would have been helpful (we had to put it on the floor in the dining area where the nearest socket was).

Problems or Bonuses

We found the dinner in the estate restaurant of very good quality and good value for money (30 EURO for 4 courses including estate wine) and were very positively surprised to find the "lady of the castle" dining in the same restaurant with family and friends at most nights. This created a warm family atmosphere and made us feel very welcome.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was very helpful and polite. The onsite administration person, a young woman, spoke good English, but could have been more polite. All other people we met later on were extremely friendly though.

For a last minute offer for the last week of August we paid 950 Euros, which we found acceptable for such a spacious and luxurious apartment at this location. Reality more than reflected the published information.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would definitely go to Tenuta Lupinari again and have also recommended it to friends. In fact, a colleague of mine and his wife have booked a week there at the end of July this year after I recommended it to them. The peace and quiet at this beautiful estate combined with the hospitality, good food and short distances to Siena, Arrezzo and Chianti has put Tenuta Lupinari at the top of our list of best places to stay in Tuscany.

By the way, for the designer shoppers (as we are): there is a Prada outlet just 20 minutes drive away in Montevarchi!

Things to do in this area

Things to do in the area are all the things you can never get enough of: wining & dining (the estate can give you some recommendations), visiting wine estates, walking through the vineyards and olive tree hills, visiting the bigger towns such as Siena or Arrezzo or the smaller villages in the Chianti area or a bit further south (Montepulciano, Montalcino, etc.), or just relax at the pool with something to read.

If you are looking for a nice day trip Rome would be very interesting, but also a drive to the coast is very nice.
