apartments on an estate near San Gimignano, Tuscany West

When

May 2005, one week

Location

Il Borghetto, the villa which houses about 15 apartments, is located a short drive or long walk from Sam Gimignano. The location is beautiful, overlooking rolling hills, vineyards, woods and other hilltop villas.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest grocery store, a Pam which has everything you need, is a 10 minute drive. One must drive to restaurants.

The House/Apartment

The building is centuries old but recently and beautifully renovated. The furnishings, paint, wall coverings, tile floors, window coverings, bathrooms were all in perfect condition and exquisitely clean. Our apartment was one of 15 on the property. The location is very quiet but if you want complete quiet, choose an apartment with an outside entrance. Several families with small children were visiting during our week and the noise was magnified in the hallways.

Garden

There are several outside areas from which to choose. Some units have more private areas outside their entrances. A lovely pool sits on a rise above the villa with a gorgeous view of the surrounding area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was in perfect shape, comfortable and completely clean. There is only a sofa in the living room. Since were were only two that was sufficient. But since the apartment can sleep up to 6 people, the LR seating would be inadequate for a full house.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were very comfortable. Clothes are hung in armoires which also include two large drawers for folded clothes. Since it was just my husband and I, he used the armoire in the second bedroom. Otherwise, drawer space is limited.

Kitchen

The kitchen is small but very well equipped and easy to work in for one person. I cooked breakfast every morning and prepared some lunches. We did have dinner in one night but, since there is no oven, everything needed to be prepared stovetop. Some units have gas ranges, but this one was electric. The only coffee maker is a stovetop espresso maker. We bought ground coffee at the Pam and had espresso with heated milk in the mornings ... delicious.

Problems or Bonuses

No real surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Can't say enough about rentvillas.com. Once I registered and requested the reservation I was contacted by phone. Our representative stayed in touch until everything was arranged. The website accurately described and depicted the property.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes! We plan to return and ask friends to join us.

Things to do in this area

We hiked through the countryside every morning. You can walk anywhere on the neighboring properties. The hills are challenging and allowed us to enjoy the 4-course lunch and dinners!

As far as restaurants, don't miss the three meals offered each week at the villa. They are wonderful. We enjoyed Chiribiri in San Gimignano (SG) ... small and inexpensive with wonderful local food and very friendly service. Dorando, also in SG, was among the best retaurants we encountered on our trip whch included Venice and Lake Garda ... the food was superb in terms of quality, preparation and presentation, the service extremely professional, and the atmosphere elegant but comfortable.

L'Antica Trattoria in Colle Val d'Elsa also was excellent ... though pricey and not quite as friendly and comfortable as Dorando.
