Review 1516: Vacanza Bella, Palazzo Piccolomini - Civetta and Leocorno

Review by jgk from FL who is a SlowTrav Contributor

1bed/1bath apartment in the center, Tuscany Siena

June 2005, 2 weeks

Location, location, location! One minute walk to Piazza del Campo in the center of Siena.

Nearby Amenities

Everything is very close by and within a 10 minute walk.

The House/Apartment

This building used to be the Piccolomini family palace in Siena. The apartment is on the top floor (third, I think) where there are about 5 apartments. There is a keyed gate to the hallway for secutiy and a key for the elevator too. The street is a bit noisy with Vespas but the windows of the apartment face the country side including a beautiful view of San Francesco church. Below is an outdoor "performance space" with concerts on weekends but they never ran later than 11:00. With the windows closed it was quiet.

NO. Strictly apartment living.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture in great shape and very comfortable. Very clean. Good sheets and plenty of towels. Not a lot of sitting around chairs but the living room and dining room are all one.

Bedroom all fine including two small bedside tables and a small TV with cable. Bathroom was big and modern but the shower only got warm, not really hot. Hair dryer and iron with ironing board were included.

Kitchen: Great. Plenty of equipment, American and Italian coffee makers, good pots and pans and dishes, even a small food processor. All appliances up to date and working well. There was even a nice vase for flowers. Clothes washing machine and dishwasher in kitchen.

Problems or Bonuses

Great views from living room and bedroom! Outside clothesline out the window on a pulley with good morning sun for drying clothes as well as an oversized drying rack inside. We loved this place!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Civetta is well and accurately represented by Vacanza Bella. Martha and Daniel were very easy to communicate with and were helpful at every turn. Barbara (onsite person) was very busy and while not being at all rude, was just not interested in us.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again in a heartbeat! Loved the location, loved Siena, loved the apartment. Light and airyness made it lovely. Three people could actually stay if one slept on the sofa in the living room.

Our teenagers stayed in apartment Leocorno, while the adults stayed in Civetta. Same building, same location, equipment etc. Leocorno is very similar but without the view. It looks just like the pictures on the website with low exposed beam cielings. It does have huge skylights which open and close by remote control. They thought their apartment was nicer than ours but, for grown ups, the Civetta is the nicer of the two.

Things to do in this area

Check out the Siena restaurant reviews on Slow Travel. Lots of close by internet options. One time splurge - have a drink at sunset at one of the bars on the Campo (we like the Bar called Il Palio ) and people watch. Tuscan light on the Tower: to die for!
