Review 153: Underground Viaggi, Emo Apartment

Review by Mindy from Oklahoma

studio apartment near Vatican, Rome

Oct. 17-20, 2001, 3 days

The location of this apartment is "behind" Vatican City in Rome. Metro and bus stations were a 5 minute walk. The museum entrance to the Vatican is about a 10 minute walk. Two banks with ATM's were within a 2 minute walk, one was just next door. Stores to purchase, flowers, wine/cheese/bread were just across the street with restuarants (good and inexpensive) just down the street.

The House/Apartment

The building was in good shape. The little apartment is located in a small building behind locked iron gates for added security. They had two chairs in a little walkway with plants that we used to sit outside, drink wine, and watch the people go by. It is located with a few other apartments that didn't seem to be vacation rentals. It is a ground floor apartment, so no major stairs to climb. The entrance sits back about 100 feet from the street and the bed is on the backside, so even though the main street out front was very busy, this was surprisingly quiet.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were in good shape. This apartment has been recently renovated and is small, more like an efficiency apartment with a small table and chairs. It was immacuately clean.

The bed is in the same room as the dining area, (remember efficiency size apartment) on a raised platform. It was clean and pretty comfortable. The bathroom is newly renovated and they supplied big terrycloth towels, and a hair dryer.

The kitchen was a pass thru to the bathroom, but had new sink, range top and small refrigerator. Our wonderful hosts had it stocked with olive oil, vinegars, sugar, all the staples if you wanted to cook and even left us fresh tomatoes. They supplied an "American" coffee maker too. All the dishes and glasses were new and in vibrant colors and they supplied good sharp knives to cut up fruit and cheese.

Problems or Bonuses

Our hosts had the apartment stocked with a multitude of maps to use plus gave us print outs of various things going on around Rome, also a cell phone was ours to use while in Rome for emergencies or to get a hold of our host. They also have remote TV that gets CNN in English! Even though this apartment is small, 2-3 people, there was plenty of storage.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The best part of this rental were the representatives. I found their website and chose it by the pictures (very true to life) and the other reviews past guests had written. Mauro Sachatti Cali and his beautiful wife, Guila, were the most gracious and fun people we encountered during our two week vacation. Their services included picking up their guests at the airport. What a huge relief after a long flight to have someone there to help with the bags and deliver you directly to your doorstep. They showed us everything about the neighborhood we were staying in, and they actually only lived a few blocks away. They even took us back to the airport to pick up a rental car (for the rest of our trip to Tuscany) and showed us exactly where to go and how to get out of the airport. Mauro speaks English well, and Guila's English is 99% better than my Italian.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes. We are planning another trip to Italy for 2002, and I've already e-mailed Mauro about renting another apartment from them next year. Currently they manage about 8 properties in Rome (A Emo is the smallest) and one in Florence.

The price was very reasonable, and you are actually staying in a neighborhood in Rome, so much better than a hotel. I would highly recommend (I already have!!) using Mauro Sachatti Cali's agency. We corresponded through e-mail and he was very prompt at returning messages. For a first time "blind" rental experience in Italy, this was 200% better than I expected due to the hospitality of our hosts.

Things to do in this area

It's Rome... eat, drink, site see, and watch it when you cross the street. This apartment is located across the street from numerous shops, and the metro lines (5 minutes away) can take you anywhere in Rome.
