Review 1546: Summer in Italy, Casa Gloria A

Review by Roberta from GA

2bed/1bath apartment in San Marco di Castellabate, Campania

June 25 - July 2, 2005, one week

Casa Gloria is in the small village of San Marco di Castellabate. The apartment is on the top floor of a newly renovated building that contains 3 other apartments. Surrounding the immediate area are other single dwellings and multi-family apartments. During the day, it is a relatively quiet area, with magnificent views of the nearby Bay of Salerno and the hilltown city of Castellebate.

Nearby Amenities

Downstairs from the apartment is a gelateria and a bar. Caffe and panini are available during the day and drinks from the bar later at night, until 2AM. Within a short walking distance, are 2 grocery stores and a salumeria. There are several "cornetterias" in the area along with shops that specialize in specific foods: fish, poultry, fruit, bread.

For larger varieties of food and wine, Santa Maria di Castellabate is a 10 minute drive, offering more selections.

There are several restaurants within walking distance of the apartment. The entire town of San Marco is small enough to walk everywhere within 5 - 10 minutes.

The House/Apartment

The building was in good condition. The apartment was peaceful and quiet during the day, until the bar started to have activity around 10:00PM.

There is a living room/dining area combination along with 2 bedrooms. The bathroom is large enough that our clothes did not get soaked while showering!

There is a balcony with gorgeous views of the surrounding area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape. The apartment was clean. There is one futon in the living room which was not all that comfortable for extended sitting, along with 8 stiff kitchen chairs throughout the apartment.

The master bedroom had one window overlooking the street, so it was slightly stuffy when there was no breeze. The bed was okay. The other bedroom had one twin bed and one futon. There are 2 windows in this room so there was a lovely airy feeling at all time. One window provides a great view of the sea.

The bathroom is large although the shower is one of the smaller versions of the "telephone booth" types that we have encountered. The washing machine in the bathroom provides extra shelf space for toiletries. There was always plenty of hot water and good water pressure.

The small kitchen was usable for light meals. The pots, pans and dishes were of good quality. There is very little space for meal preparation, so we were not able to cook as much as we would have liked to. The stove worked fine, with plenty of heat on all the burners.

Problems or Bonuses

The views from the balcony were magnificent, as described on the website. The beach is great and within a 5 minute walk.

We were disturbed each night by the loud noises from the bar downstairs. This was not advertised on the website. Casa Gloria is located on the main street to the beach, so there was motor scooter noise all night while the bar was open.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The folks at Summer in Italy were professional and readily answered our questions. However, when specifically asking about the noise level from the gelateria, we were told that it closed at 11:30 and there was no mention about the bar at all. We were specifically told that the area was quiet.

The manager of the building met us in a professional manner and showed us the basics of the apartment. When we had further questions, we were able to get them easily answered by the staff at the gelateria. We requested a fan and a few more pillow cases which were given to us within a matter of minutes. The staff at the gelateria and the bar were wonderful - exceptionally helpful, friendly and caring.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

During the off-season, when the bar is not open, this is probably a peaceful, lovely area. The beach is wonderful, the people of the town are friendly and the food is delicious. For night owls, this could be ideal during the summer. If renting during the summer, it would be prudent to take along ear plugs.

Things to do in this area

Swim! Relax with a glass of wine while sitting on the balcony, watching the lights of the surrounding cities and hilltowns. We enjoyed our meals at Stella Marina in San Marco. The prices were very reasonable, the food freshly prepared and air conditioning that worked!
