Review 1556: Doorways, Villa Cardinale

Review by Ellen Simon from PA

villa, sleeps 9, near Lucca, Tuscany North

June 25 - July 9, 2005, two weeks

It was 4 KM from Lucca on the top of a hill overlooking olive groves, grapes and the countryside.

Nearby Amenities

There is a Gelateria/Coffee Shop/pastry shop at the bottom of the driveway.

The House/Apartment

The house dates from 1500 and was in wonderful shape. The ground floor has an eat-in kitchen, dining room (which we never used because we ate outside) and one single bedroom with full bath; The second floor has a sitting room with satellite TV and stereo and a master king-sized bedroom with an enormous bath with jacuzzi tub and shower.

The third floor has a queen bedroom with full bath and a twin bedroom with small sitting room with a trundle bed and full bath.

It was very peaceful and serene.

There are several outside sitting areas with a lovely pool only for our use.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in very good shape but we rarely sat indoors so I think there was enough seating. The house was very clean and taken care of 6 days a week by a housekeeper.

The beds were very comfortable and there was lots of closet and drawer space plus good reading lights and there are plenty of modern bathrooms.

The kitchen was usable but supplies for cooking were limited. There were a few utensils and pots and pans - could be improved. The coffee pot was of the Mr Coffee variety but it took one hour to brew a pot of coffee - this was annoying. We only cooked once - did a lot of take-out from a marvelous shop in Lucca which was recommended by the owners of the villa. There are vast quantities of dishes but not enough glasses - the owners are resupplying the glasses which must have been broken over time.

Problems or Bonuses

It was far nicer that any of us expected and the housekeeper (who did our laundry) was a wonderful bonus since there were three small children. Believe it or not, the coffee pot was our only complaint!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Kit Burns of Doorways was wonderful - she was very responsive to all of our pre-trip questions and concerns. The D's are incredible owners. We had dinner at their home on the night that we arrived and then were invited to a fabulous 4th of July party. They gave us tons of wonderful information and helpful hints and supplied us with their own red and white wine and olive oil for the duration of our stay. They also allowed us to use their tent at the most beautiful beach that I've ever seen.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would return in an instant and would recommend it to everyone. It was one of the best vacations that we've ever had and we travel a lot.

Things to do in this area

We went out almost every day - there is so much to do in the area. Doorways supplied us with a wonderful amount of material on the area, restaurants and more things to do and see that we could fit in. I can't possibly list them all but suffice it to say that there is lots to do if you so desire.
