Review 1580: Rentvillas, Villa Il Sogno/Casa Faro

Review by Kelly from MA

4bed/2.5bath house in Positano, Campania

2005, one week

Villa Il Sogno is a lovely house on the beach in Positano, Italy. The great thing about it was that it was close to everything - public transportation, the boats/ferries, restuarants and groceries. If you know the area then you know that Positano is quite compact with every place having a view. You really don't need a car - as parking is quite difficult. We took a car service from Naples (train station) to Positano - it was worth every penny!

Nearby Amenities

There were 2 great grocery stores where the owners were more than happy to help you select the best local wines/ cheeses or meats. Unfortunately, with all the fabulous resturants nearby it was hard to get motivated to cook! There was a great place to get baked goods for breakfast. We loved the restuarant Chez Black - great food and a fun place to people watch. If you want a great place that overlooks town - try Bruno's. Get there early for one of the 9 outside tables. The mussel soup and clams with spagetti are delicous! Our other favorite was La Cambusa - excellent food! We loved Mario (our waiter - as he recommended fabulous dishes). Try the white peaches if they are in season.

The House/Apartment

The house was adorable. The layout was quite easy - off the living/dining room was a huge patio - that looked out towards the beach and water.

The patio was great. It did look down onto a garden but it was for another house.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was great. It was like a beach house. You felt very comfortable, especially with kids. Plenty of room for all of us to gather either inside or out. Beautiful tile floors - very bright and cheery. Everything was done in a blue and yellow color scheme. The place was very clean.

There were 4 bedrooms which worked out great, as we did this with another family. One flight up was a room with twins, the next flight up had a room with bunks, a room with a queen and then a room with another queen and full bath. There were plenty of bathrooms (that were quite big). Also having a washing machine and dishwasher was helpful.

The kitchen was good - not very big - but then again we really didn't cook much. There were plenty of pots and pans and dishes.

Problems or Bonuses

They did mention that it could be noisy. At first I couldn't figure out why but it was because we were near all the restaurants. Obviously, they are on a much later schedule than us - eating around 7:30pm until very late. It is very festive. We used the A/C or fans and that eliminated the noise.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Rentvillas was great. We were well prepared. The onsite person met us, spoke perfect English and provided us with some local tips. The place was exactly as they explained it. We went in June so the price was better than during the really high season also you tend to avoid all the crowds. Spliting the cost with another family also makes it more affordable.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would definitely stay here again as it is a good base for a lot of other exploring.

Things to do in this area

A day trip to Capri - although the boat schedule really doesn't allow you much time. Don't do the boat trip around the island - just go see the Blue Grotto. That was quite fun.

Took the boat to Amalfi (felt like a tourist trap - recommended was Di Gemma Restuarant but closed on Wed.) and caught a bus up to Ravello (quite easy). Loved Ravello - if you can go during the summer - try to see an outdoor evening concert at Villa Rulofo(?). The setting is unbelievable!!

Took the local bus to Sorrento and caught the train up to Pompeii. If you really want info on the site - get a guide. The kids had fun but it was a quick trip - limited attention spans (hot and dry). Had a great lunch in Sorrento before we got the bus back to Positano. One fun thing we did every other day was rent an inflatible boat. You can get it at the beach in Positano. We would go explore the coastline - snorkel and jump off rocks. It is a magical place!
