Review 1593: Real Venice, Gli Angeli
2bed/1bath apartment in Castello, Venice
June 2005, 6 nights
The Gli Angeli apartment is located in the Castello area of Venice. It is very close to the Arsenal and Via Garibaldi. It was about a 10 minute walk to San Marco Square. We enjoyed the area since it was very quiet at night and was close to grocery stores and other shops.
This apartment is not centrally located in Venice. It can be quite a hike to certain areas of Venice. However, the vaporetto stop is approximately 2 blocks from the apartment.
Sonia, the apartment owner gave the 4 of us each 2 coupons for Brioche and Coffee at the nearby Bar Angio. Bar Angio is just around the corner from the apartment and is situated right on the lagoon. We enjoyed having coffee here in the mornings and watching the boats in the lagoon. The brioche were very good also! We walked about 3-5 minutes to reach the Via Garibaldi to go to the grocery store. There are many decent restaurants nearby.
The apartment is in a very old building in Venice. There is one flight of stairs to reach the apartment and no elevator. I think there were 4 or 5 other apartments in the building.
The apartment was very clean and fairly spacious. The entrance is into the kitchen and the 2 bedrooms are across the hall from each other. There is no living area in this apartment. It would have been nice to have a comfortable couch to sit on after a long day of touring. There was a beautiful garden area that we were able to use since we visited in June and the weather was warm.
There is a private garden area that the renters of this apartment can enjoy. It is accessed with a spiral staircase from the kitchen. The garden area was well cared for, spacious and very private. I think the garden area was our favorite aspect of this apartment.
The furniture was in good condition and was somewhat comfortable. There is no living room in the apartment. The dining area is a part of the kitchen.
The master bedroom was very roomy and was very nicely decorated. The second bedroom is very long and narrow with 2 twin beds placed headboard to headboard. The beds were very comfortable in both bedrooms. The smaller bedroom did not have much storage area for belongings but there was a closet in the hallway.
There is just one bathroom. It would have been more convenient to have 2 bathrooms since we were a party of 4, but we were able to work this out. The bathroom was clean, modern and was in good shape. The shower was fairly spacious and had good water pressure.
The kitchen was large and fairly well equipped. There is seating at the kitchen table for 4 people. We did not cook much in the kitchen. We did use the decent sized refrigerator to store snacks and beverages.
Problems or Bonuses
Sonia, the apartment owner was very kind and helpful. She helped me arrange a surprise anniversary party for our friends who were traveling with us. She provided us with a complimentary bottle of red wine. She also bought a cake for us which I paid for when we checked out.
After dinner on our first night, we arrived in the garden area and she switched on the lights and the fountain in the garden area. The wine and the cake, complete with napkins, plates and party favors were on the table for us. It was a very nice way for our friends to celebrate their 30th anniversary!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked directly with the owner through the use of email. We paid 149 Euro per night for 4 people in June. We were able to secure the apartment with a credit card number. No deposit necessary. Cancellation policies were very generous. We paid the owner cash on our 2nd day in the apartment.
Sonia, the apartment owner was very friendly and spoke English very well. The pictures of the apartment online accurately show what the apartment looks like.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, we would stay here again. But, the renter needs to be aware that this apartment is not centrally located in Venice. Walking to areas such as the Dorsoduro or Cannareggio take a good 30 minutes or more.
Things to do in this area
One of our favorite nights in Venice was spent at the nearby restaurant of Al Giorgione. The food was good, not great, but the owner is a retired gondolier and he gets out his guitar and sings around 9:30. Other people came up and joined him or sang solo. It was kind of like an Italian Karaoke night!
There were lots of Italians celebrating events here and we were probably the only Americans. We had so much fun joining in on a Venitian celebration. We were treated very well and everyone had a great time!
