Review 1598: Amalfi Coast Rental (Primula), Ciclamino

Review by Anne lewis from England

2bed apartment in Tovere above Amalfi, Campania

May 2005, 1 week

This apartment was situated in Tovere, 5km above Amalfi, in a small village. The owner lived above the apartment. The apartment was immaculate and spacious, with a large balcony with a wonderful view over the sea. The owners were kind, discreet and hospitable (giving us their own lemons and a bottle of wine from their own grapes!) The Amalfi coast, Naples, Pompeii, and Vesuvius were all easily accessible by car, and in the evenings we could return to the peace of the apartment. Although tourist attractions are within easy reach, it was a pleasure to stay in a rural location, surrounded by terraces where lemons, olives, vines and vegetables were growing.

Nearby Amenities

We had to drive for about 2km down the hill to the nearest small grocery; more shops and restaurants etc. were to be found in Amalfi, a lively and characterful town about 5km away. The only disadvantage was that the driving was quite a challenge as people tend to drive fast on the narrow winding roads! But you do get used to the idiosyncratic driving style...

The agency has many other apartments in less rural locations.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was very peaceful and quiet (apart from the firework displays which echoed nightly up and down the coast!) It was the only apartment in the area. It was all on one level with a large kitchen/diner/sitting area at the back, then two bedrooms which both gave onto the balcony, which was where we spent most of our time.

No pool. Sitting area was the balcony which was private.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape and very comfortable. The whole apartment was very clean indeed and furnished so as to be easy to keep clean - it was good not to have to spend a long time cleaning.

The bathroom had a basin, bidet and shower - all very modern and functioning well. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds comfortable.

I enjoyed cooking very much, making full use of the fresh and fabulous quality local produce. The kitchen was well equipped and the fact it was in the same area as the dining room and sitting area meant that preparing meals was a sociable affair.

Problems or Bonuses

The apartment was better than it appeared on the website, and the views stunning. Only problem was the beaches and sea were less clean than we would have liked.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency were great - it was easy to book by email, and their responses to email were very prompt. We were stupid to arrive at night, and managed to get lost on the way - do ensure you arrive in the daylight. However, the person meeting us kept in contact by mobile phone and waited for us until eleven o'clock at night to guide us the last bit of the way and introduce us to the owners. She was incredibly patient and kind, especially as she had been waiting in a car for about 2 hours.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes we would stay again - probably in another location to explore a different part of the area, but we would have no hesitation in using this company again, and have already recommended this apartment to friends.

Things to do in this area

Lovely views and coastline - Amalfi, Positano, Minori were some of our favourite places - although we wish the local councils would be stricter with pleasure boats about emptying rubbish into the sea.

Naples - a brilliant vibrant city.

Vesuvius - exciting trip for the kids who are convinced that the volcano will erupt as soon as they set foot on it!

Pompeii and Herculaneum - unique

Best ice creams in Amalfi!
