Review 165: TuscanHouse, Torre San Domenico
3bed/2.5bath house in Cetona, Tuscany South
Sept. 10th – Sept 15th, 2001, 5 days
This dwelling is an old 4 level (5 if you count the cellar) tower built into the one of the interior walls of the hill town Cetona. The tower is situated on a charming, quiet street (although mornings can be a bit loud as people head off to work in their Apes. It is just a few minutes walk to food shops, restaurants, a bank, etc.
The tower has been recently restored by the owners who have done a beautiful job. There are views of the countryside from every window. The ground or entry level has an entry hall, a small laundry room, a powder room and a small sparsely appointed "reading room" which according to the owner is still evolving. A few steps down, is a back door which opens out to a big terrace with a patio table, chairs and potted plants. Each morning we had our breakfast out here as we planned our day and looked out at the countryside.
The next level up is the kitchen and living room. Rob and I did not cook while we were here, but there is a full kitchen, including an oven and a big 6 burner stove top. There is also a dishwasher, an under-counter fridge and a full size fridge/freezer in the pantry. The owner, Sacha, is a gourmet cook and there is a vast assortment of pots and pans, cutlery and dinnerware. According to Zak, she did all the cooking for the Slow Traveler’s Potluck in this kitchen.
Also in the kitchen area, is a large country table with benches on both sides for dining. The seating in the living room consisted of a couch, which was comfortable, and 2 chairs which were not. Lots of sunlight and views from this room. The living room also had a TV and phone.
The 3rd level has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom in between the rooms. The bedrooms were a nice size and the bed we slept on was quite comfortable. There were large antique armoires in both rooms for clothing and storage. The bathroom was nice with plenty of hot water. It has a tub with a hand held shower, but no shower curtain.
The 4th level was closed off – reserved for the owner’s use only. Should that change in the future, the 4th level includes another bedroom and bathroom and a balcony with great views of Tuscany.
The owner, Sacha, was very nice. She showed us around the place and gave us 2 bottles of wine upon arrival. After helping us get situated, she walked us down to one of the family restaurants in town and made sure we got a table before leaving us.
We loved staying in Cetona. It was perfect for us – quiet, not very touristy, with food markets, a bank and restaurants, etc. all within a few minutes walk. Free parking was also very close. We also loved the tower and highly recommend it. Overall, it was nicely decorated and well appointed with antiques and comfortable furniture for the most part. The terrace off the back was a big plus for us. You do have to be okay with a few flights of stairs so keep that in mind.
