7bed/4bath villa near Castellina, Tuscany Chianti When23 - 30 July 2005, One week ReviewThe house is part of a large estate of vineyards and woods, and provides very pleasant views of the countryside and hills. It is well equipped, not in a luxurious fashion, but with nothing missing. All articles are functional and sturdy, unlikely to be broken by children (we had seven of them with us, aged 2 1/2 - 12) and in reasonably good taste. We were lucky with the weather, and sat mostly outside, in the garden or by the pool, enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside. This was a family reunion for my wife and myself, our three married children and seven grandchildren. We invariably had a barbecue dinner outside, with my son acting as chef. We enjoyed the excellent wine porduced by the estate, which we purchased from them at a discount. A word of warning for those who rent a villa for the first time. Take into account that the rental starts on a Saturday afternoon and that shops in Italy are closed on Sundays. We visited the excellent COOP Supermarket of Poggibonsi, the nearest town, on Saturday morning and made sure we had enough food and supplies for the weekend. We forgot however, to buy repellent spray for the mosquitoes. The house is not far from Florence and Siena, and those of us who wanted to see the sites, did so. On the whole, we had an excellent time and the children enjoyed it enormously. They were mostly in the pool, or playing football (girls as well) or table tennis (a very good table and bats are provided).
