Review 174: Owner, Casa Sora Chiara

Review by Helen from Italy

3bed/3.5bath house in Montone, Umbria

Winter 2002, I did not stay here, but visited the house

The first thing that impressed me about this villa is it's position, right on the main street of the village of Montone. Montone is a wonderful walled medieval hill-top village in the north of Umbria and this is a great opportunity to be a part of an Italian community - feel you are actually living there, even for a short period, rather than a visitor looking on from the outskirts.

You can see village life going on right outside your door - there is a patio, table, and chairs for you to do just that. As Margie's guests you will be accepted by everyone and welcomed. If you are any good at chatting people up you will be able to find someone who will sell you local wine, oil, etc. You may also be able to find a local woman (particularly an elderly one) to show you how to make some local dish - a few cookery lessons!

On arrival you will be met by Anna, a really lovely lady who has lived in Montone since she was a young girl. She will be very happy to introduce you to people and give you all the local information that will help you enjoy your holiday.

Now to the villa itself. Usually there is some element of "making do" when renting accommodation, no matter how good it is. Casa Sora Chiara is a home. Depending on where you are coming from, it will either be home away from home or the home you have always dreamt of! Furniture, fittings, and amenities are of a very high quality, not chosen with an eye to prudence.

Margie has described the villa very well on your site Pauline - I don't think there is any need for me to repeat it, is there?

I would add that the views are wonderful from the upper floors, the ground floor doesn't have a view but should keep cooler in the summer - a great relief when you don't have air-conditioning!

One small point: This villa is not suitable if you like to lie out and sunbathe. You will need to go to a local swimming pool for that.
